Disciplinary Meetings The requirements for licensure in the state of Nevada are completion of internship, and passing the exam that is approved by the board. Three letters of recommendation, one personal or professional letter. The applicant must also complete at least two years of postgraduate experience. The site must be
approved through AAMFT. At least 3,000 hours of supervised experience. 1,500 hours of which must have direct client contact. Lastly 300 hours must be direct supervision, this must also include 160 hours with a primary supervisor. There will also be a secondary supervisor who will oversee 40 hours. I live at the state border, and it would be convenient to have a license where I reside. Living adjacent to Utah will make it beneficial to attempt getting a license in Utah the requirements are slightly different. The requirements for the state of Utah are as follows: must pass exam approved by the board and complete 4,000 hours of training experience. This training must be completed in less than two years. The student must be supervised under a board approved supervisor. This includes 100 hours of direct supervision, and a minimum of 1,000 of mental health therapy. Lastly, the training must also have two hours of suicide prevention training. There’s a couple of differences when comparing Utah and Nevada. Utah requires 4,000 hours meanwhile Nevada is 3,000. It was interesting to see that Utah requires two hours of suicide prevention training. The suicide rate in Utah is 20.1, and the death rate for Nevada is 21.5 (
Health, 2022).
Looking for the records of the meeting was difficult. Non-sexual dual relations are one of the highest reported cases. There was a total of 48 cases. It’s unclear how many of these cases were in Utah or Nevada. The next violation was failure to complete continuing education units (CEU). There was a total of
45 cases. These are requirements for renewing licensing. In the state of Utah, the therapist must complete at least 40 hours of continuing exudation units (
Utah Department of Commerce, 2022).
15 of which must be related to marriage and family therapy. 6 hours of ethics or law. In the state of Nevada
for renewal license the clinician must have 40 hours of continuing education units (
The Official State
3
of Nevada Website, 2021).
6 of those hours are ethics specifically related to marriage and family
therapy. There is also 4 hours of suicide prevention. The third most common violation is sexual dual relationships. There was a total of 44 cases. Based on ethical guidelines a frequent violation was having dual relationships with the clients. This can be a violation of confidentiality and understanding boundaries. Standard 5.4 states any kind of impairment to professional judgments must be terminated or referred to a different clinician. Mental health professionals set boundaries with their clients. Some of these may include gifting or meeting outside office hours. The therapist must determine the ethical outcomes that will arise if these boundaries are violated. Under no circumstance should a therapist meet their client outside office hours. It will be a violation of ethical guidelines. The second most common violation was failure to complete CEU’s. For clients it’s important for the therapist to be knowledgeable in new areas. Some of these subjects can include gender diversity, race, and social injustices. For a violation of dual relationships, the therapist was required to take CEU’s. Other types of consequences include probation, and voluntary resignation. Failure to not complete CEU’s will result in a fine. For therapist who have sexual relationships with their clients some of the consequences include voluntary resignation, The board might look at different aspects of the problem and use ethical guidelines to make the best decision possible. Letting a clinician continue to practice and be a risk for clients, can be dangerous and cause further trauma to clients. I would assume the committee will consider all areas of the problem and go through a process of decision making. As a therapist doing some self-reflection and take time for yourself will help differentiate between professional and personal life. The career as a marriage and family therapy can be emotionally,
and mentally challenging. Completing responsibilities that are part of the career is important, and help the person grow as a clinician. Continuing education in a field that is constantly change with research, and social movements. It’s essential to understand and acknowledge these changes. Establishing

boundaries and developing an appropriate relationship with the clients Making sure I focus on myself, and mental health will help me perform to the best of my abilities.

Violation: Non-sexual dual relationships Ethical Decision-Making Model Identify the problem
The therapist has been seeing the client outside office hours.
The therapist will meet outside of the session in tasks such as socializing at a food court, support
the client’s children.
The therapist will occasionally by the client gifts
The client and therapist have seen each other 2-
3 times a week during the span of 9 months Apply code of ethics
Ethical guidelines standard 5.4 the therapist has the obligation their relationship with the client does not impair clinical judgement.
2.7 states that therapist who discusses with colleagues or referral does not share confidential
information. Any information that can be lead to
the identity of the client must have written consent from the client Information can be shared only with the extent necessary to achieve
the purpose of consultation. Determine nature and dimensions of dilemma
This case has violated justice by mistreating the client, and not giving proper services. The counselor treats her clients differently since she has a relationship outside of the session. This decreases her judgment in clinical practice.
The therapist has decreased their performance and has cause the client to have a different outlook on therapy. Socializing outside of the session has caused the client and therapist to overstep boundaries.
The therapist has failed to stay loyal and honest to the commitment of being a marriage and family therapist. The client must be able to trust the counselor in a professional setting, and not allow personal judgement to come across. The counselor has the responsibility therapeutic relationship is being follow and following ethical guidelines. Generate potential courses of action
The therapist can pay a fine for any repercussions it has caused in session.
Another course of action can be have the therapist complete CEU’s that relate to ethical
6
decisions, and boundaries.
Revoking, or temporarily freezing the license can be considered.
Terminating the session, and referring the client to a different clinician Consider potential consequences of each course of action for all parties involved
The therapist can pay the fine, but it’s unclear whether the therapist will learn from the situation. There’s a possibility for the client to continue seeing the therapist since there are no further consequences
The therapist can take CEU’s and learn more about the consequences of violating the code of ethics. In addition, the therapist can learn more about boundaries, and find alternative ways to build relationships with clients. The session, and
referring the client to a different clinician
Terminating the license of the therapist will be a
severe form of punishment. The therapist will no longer be able to practice, and the client will have to find a different therapist. The therapeutic alliance will have to be restored with
the new therapist.
Lastly, therapy will have to be terminated, and the therapist will no longer be able to see the client. The therapist will have to give the client a referral. The client might hold resentment towards the therapist. Evaluate the selected course of action
Having the therapist take CEU’s will help refresh their mind on ethical guidelines, and therapeutic boundaries. This will benefit the client and therapist
This will make it fair for all aspects of the problem.
Terminating therapy with the client will help them reach their goals in a professional setting. Seeing a therapist who does not of their judgement impaired will benefit the client.
The therapist will terminate therapy and refer the client to a different specialist. The client will
still be able to seek services without having to find someone.
This course of action would be recommended to
other therapist, and people who work within the field.
