Class Preparation
Please submit your preparation notes the evening before class. This is an open-book, open-note assignment. However, your work should be your own – copying and pasting from other sources is plagiarism. I strongly recommend attempting this from memory.
If you aren’t sure of the answers, try your very best, and then go back to the readings and check your work. When you are done, copy and paste your answers into the unit preparation quiz. What does it mean that each person has a moral sense of how they ought to treat others? What are some examples of this moral sense in action, from your own experiences?
This means that every person has a sense of the right and wrong way of treating others. The idea that others should be treated with respect, compassion, and consideration is moral sense of how they ought to treat others. People should be viewed as individuals rather than objects used to get ahead. An example of this in my own life is having sympathy for my friend when something goes wrong in their lives. This is moral sense because I know this is the right way to treat the people in my life. Another example is being patient with customer service workers. It is wrong to treat them rudely would be the wrong way to treat people. Describe in your own words two different “mindsets” that we each step into from day-to-day,
and how they differ. The inward and outward mindsets are the two mindsets we step into day-to-day. The inward mindset focuses on yourself. It prioritizes an individualistic view of the world. People with an inward mindset focus on their goals without looking at the needs of
others. The outward mindset focuses on the needs of the people around you. Instead of
focusing on personal goals, people with an outward mindset are focused on the goals and needs of the group. What happens when we ignore or neglect our moral sense? How does our cognition
change as we choose to betray our sense of what is right? Ignoring or neglecting our moral sense is known as self-betrayal. In Brother Thaynes example he talked about choosing not to take the trash out for his roommate. His mood began to change he became angry, and he started thinking about all the negative experiences with his roommate. These negative experiences that came to mind were trying to help justify his decision. When we go against our moral sense and betray ourselves, we begin to try and justify the choice we made. We attempt to make ourselves feel like the choice we made was right. Describe an experience you have had in which you felt that something was right but did otherwise. Did you engage in self-justification? If so, what form did that self-justification take? Growing up I played hockey, my brother and I are a year apart, so we were always on the same team. Before every hockey practice we had to throw our bags into the back of my dad’s truck. One of the times I picked up my bag I noticed that my brother’s bag was open and some of his equipment had fallen out, I knew I should put his equipment in his bag so he didn’t forget or lose anything, but I chose not to. He left one of his skates at home. I thought to myself that Justin was irresponsible, and he had been moody that day, so it wasn’t my problem that he didn’t have his skates.
