Current Approach to Problem Solving
Effective problem solving involves developing and using many skills and traits to resolve
unexpected issues that may arise in the work area. In order for me to be effective in problem solving I first analyze the problem to make sure that I clearly define the true problem that is presented. I collect the facts and information needed to decipher the existing problem to get to the root causes of the problem. Once I have identified the problem, I then generate solutions that can solve the problem. I first come up with my own solutions and then I use surrounding supports to help provide more solutions. Reviewing the solutions, I carefully look at each solution to determine which solution has the best outcome to solve the problem and best impacts the people involved. I then choose which solution best produces the desired outcome determined and provides the most benefits to the parties involved.
Example of Approach to Problem Solving
Using this approach to problem solving is a daily task I complete as a Registered Nurse Case Manager in the Emergency Room. I use these problem-solving skills to help many patients who may have multiple problems and social issues. I must also use my problem-solving skills not only for the patients but also for the hospital as I must also look at potential problems that may cause a patient to have increased length of stay that then is not cost effective for the hospital. I must try to solve the problems that are prohibiting a stable patient to have a quick, safe
discharge and I work efficiently and effectively to solve each problem presented to facilitate the most desired outcome for the patient and the hospital.
Why Use This Approach
3
This approach I use has been developed over the many years of serving in healthcare and learning from experiences. I have been taught different ways to approach situations or problems by many mentors, coworkers and leadership over the years and I simply have taken different skills and traits from each one and developed an approach that best leads to a positive outcome and resolution. This approach allows for effective and efficient resolutions to problems.
Conclusion
Problem-solving skills are important skills to have and develop throughout your career. Organizations rely on people to have good problem-solving skills to handle difficult and unexpected problems and complex challenges with in the workplace. Having the ability to solve problems effectively and efficiently with in the work environment can make you a valuable asset.
