HAS 4400 Failure to Meet Ethical Standards
This case study comes from Chapter 7 Government Ethics and the Law, Page 197. The Case is titled, “Failure to Meet Ethical Standards”. Describe the ethical theories, principles, and values of concern in this case:
There are a few primary principles, values, and theories involved in the case study that stand out. First, I see the principle of Nonmaleficence or to do no harm, Meyers has a history of exhibiting dangerous behaviors that violate this principle. On different occasions Meyers was outlined being disruptive and abusive, interfering with another physician, being condescending towards women, breaking sterile field, and several instances of throwing a scalpel during surgery. All those actions and reports are very unprofessional and not appropriate in a medical setting. Second Meyers raises concerns about beneficence, his lack of urgency in completing medical record forms could prove to be dangerous in a later diagnosis and treatment of a patient. The delay in filling out a report and diagnosis could lead to mistakes and problems for patients further down the line in their treatment. Describe what steps the organization could take to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The first step I would suggest eliminating further occurrences in the future would be implementation of continual evaluations throughout the first provisional year. This could be
beneficial to see first year providers at different points throughout the year, and how they behave and interacting in different settings. After each evaluation, insight and critiques could be given on improvement to be made. Also, maintaining a work culture of openness and accountability about inappropriate behavior would be wise to implement. This keeps providers and employees accountable to higher standards, where actions have consequences. It seems apparent that reports had been made in the case study involving the doctor throughout his first year, but it seems until his request for staff privileges at the hospital took place, no action was taken to correct or reprimand him. Which ethical theory (Page 4-10) aligns with your answer to these questions?
When looking over my responses I found my answers best aligning with Normative ethics. Normative ethics as described in the textbook is “concerned about establishing standards or norms for conduct and is commonly associated with investigating how one ought to act.” In this situation where someone was under review and their actions were being investigated and discussed, helps me associate normative theory with the case study.
