Critical Thinking Assessment Instructions: These discussion prompts will assess your writing and reading comprehension skills regarding the importance of developing critical thinking skills, especially within the framework of this class. Each prompt is worth 10 points and will require  at least a four-sentence paragraph response and must be written at a college level (i.e., no misspelled words or sentence fragments), or they will not be accepted . 1. In your own words (no quotes), explain the two challenges professors face in academia, especially regarding classes that address social justice and inequality issues. The challenges that professors face in academia when they are teaching classes that address social justice or inequality are not easy. Students are not ready to engage or really get in-depth to the extent of the material in scholarly ways as well and they are not able to incorporate different ideas into their already-held beliefs and opinions. These factors can make it difficult for professors to address social justice or inequality issues in the manner of importance in which they need to be discussed. Students need to be willing to challenge themselves to criticize, understand, and discuss the topics presented integrated with past knowledge. 2. In your own words (no quotes), explain how Principle 1 helps us strive for intellectual humility. Principle 1 helps us strive for intellectual humility by informing us that although it is possibly uncomfortable, it is important to get the understanding you need. In order for students to really utilize the materials and papers on which they are given to read, research, or report, we need to make sure that we are really comprehending the material presented to us. Asking questions, re-reading, taking notes, and being more open to using other materials such as a dictionary, should be tools we are using to better our understanding. This can allow students to grow in different areas of comfort and can also improve academics. 3. In your own words (no quotes), explain how Principle 2 helps us critically examine why personal opinions differ from informed knowledge. Principle 2 helps us critically examine personal opinions and how they differ from informed knowledge because opinions are held by an individual and do not incorporate the understanding of all issues. Opinions are held by everyone, but in the classroom, it
can be extremely difficult to work with people who are not willing to give thought to their opinions being wrong. Opinions are backed only by presumptions of facts, which can detour students from fully understanding the class materials and issues being presented to them. Informed knowledge is backed by legitimate facts and research and takes into account all factors. 4. In your own words (no quotes), explain why examining historical patterns of human behavior better develops critical thinking skills instead of relying on anecdotal evidence, as described by Principle 3 . Anecdotal evidence is evidence that is limited to an individual's experience. Principle 3 helps us recognize that examining historical patterns of human behavior better develops our critical thinking skills rather than anecdotal evidence because it allows us to expand our thinking to ways past what we are familiar with. Examining the historical patterns of human behavior is better to draw evidence from because it will give us a better understanding of the similar and different societies react and behave. For example, after a football game (here at Boise State) if we won, we celebrate and cheer on our team, and when we lose we walk out, bummed, and might talk about what went wrong, or to the other team. But in other societies, whether a team has won or lost, they might act in a completely different way. We would not be able to understand the full complexity of behavior in all humans without studying historical human behavior, we can not believe only what we are seeing in our small part of the world. 5. In your own words (no quotes), explain how Principle 4 helps us gain deeper self- knowledge by addressing a misconceived and problematic sense-making framework. Addressing a misconceived and problematic sense-making framework helps us gain deeper knowledge if we choose to incorporate our past feelings or thoughts with an opening to learn from another perspective. Principle 4 helps us identify that when we are introduced to these frameworks, feelings of discomfort or possible guilt may occur because they challenge our past knowledge. And this can lead to us trying to reject all of what we are being taught which is not wise. We need to challenge our already-held knowledge with others' perspectives. 6. In your own words (no quotes), explain how Principle 5 informs your reactions to your instructor and those whose work you study in this course. Principle 5 informs us students of our social positionality within a classroom. Our social positionalities affect our reactions toward the instructor and the way we engage with course material. If we are found in a classroom with a female or African-American male teacher, we may be more open to engaging in conversation about, for instance, the pay
gap than we would with a white male instructor. This reaction informs the instructor, differing in my example, of possible feelings of discomfort or courage from their students.
