Dawkins GQs 1. What is deference? Why is it necessary? What qualifies as appropriate deference? What qualifies as unwarranted deference? Deference is when a worker prioritizes their employer’s needs over their own. This is necessary in the workplace because it involves workers to prioritize labor in exchange for compensation. Deference should be practiced in moderation. Appropriate Deference occurs when workers willingly approve employment objectives without it leading to negative impacts on their well-being. Unwarranted Deference occurs when a worker's sacrifices outweigh the benefits that they receive. 2. What is Dawkins referring to by use of the term “voice”? Why is voice important for employees to have? Dawkins refers to the term “voice” as the ability of workers to express their concerns and improve their workplace environment. It is vital for workers to have a “voice” so they can advocate for change, leading to better work conditions and practices. 3. What are some of the main differences between direct voice and independent voice? What are the goals of each? Generate an example of each as they might be used by college students on campus. The main differences between direct voice and independent voice lie in the approach and goals. Direct Voice: involves flexible communication between employee and employer to combine solutions (i.e., students and professors meeting to discuss course improvements) Independent Voice: involves empowering employees to express their voice on their own, aiming for collective bargaining and challenging the employers (i.e., students organize together to advocate for changes about a course without the administration's approval) 4. What are the reasons that collective bargaining is essential for independent voice? Collective bargaining is essential for independent voice because it provides employees a platform to negotiate for better working conditions and benefits. It also helps employees express their needs and preferences so they are considered in the decision-making process. 5. What is the relationship between labor rights and human rights? Labor rights and Human rights are intertwined in the workplace; a subset of human rights. Labor rights, like having the ability to form unions, are essential for human well-being to have an independent voice in the workplace. 6. What is human dignity in the sense that Dawkins refers to? Part of what it entails is self-determination, so develop what that involves in the context of employment. Dawkins refers to human dignity as having self-determination, which is crucial in employment. Having self-determination in the workplace involves employees having autonomy and influence over workplace decisions; especially in a place where an individual spends most of their time. Labor Unions protect that self-determination, providing employees with a collective voice in bettering their work life.
7. Dawkins provides a substantive argument for why unions are relevant to justice. How would you define justice as the concept is operative in this argument? What are the particular interventions that unions deliver to enhance justice? In this argument, justice is defined as the fair administration of economic opportunities and outcomes in an employment context. The way that Unions enhance justice is by how it provides employees with negotiation power in the bettering of work conditions and benefits. Unions act as a way to protect against the exploitation of employers. Employees collectively increase their leverage in promoting equity.
