Report
1 Family Relationships After a Disaster The initial meeting with the couple presents an opening to establish a connection, gather information, and assess the nature of the concerns of the couple. During this initial meeting, there is an opportunity to create a place where the couple feels heard and understood. Due to having the opportunity to establish a connection with the couple and the fact that “disclosure and intimate revelations of personal or social problems are not acceptable to some cultural communities” (Sue, et al., 2020), it would be best to seek the help of a cultural 'broker' and engage in supervised assistance in order to gain a greater understanding of the couple’s culture and how to approach their needs in a respectful and culturally mindful way. “Cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity are important factors for consideration in delivering counseling related services” and in order to be sensitive to these factors, one must be willing to admit when they need help in providing a service to other cultures, ethnicities, and races (AACC Code of Ethics, 2023). According to the textbook, the cultural values and characteristics of diverse people influence the counseling process. “Several culture‐bound characteristics of therapy may trigger and reinforce negative beliefs about diverse cultural communities” (Sue, et al., 2022). Therefore, understanding the impact of cultural values, beliefs, communication styles, and family dynamics is vital in addressing the needs of diverse people. In the circumstance where the biracial couple is struggling with cultural issues and anxiety, the counselor must acknowledge and respect the cultural values that outline the couple's experiences and perceptions. The Holy Bible tells us in Galatians 3:28, that there is neither Jew nor Greek; all are one in Jesus Christ (King James Version). Having this mindset with assist one with serving all cultures, races, and ethnicities with the love of Christ.
