Discussion Thread: Community Observation After traveling around my town, I was able to observe it from a new perspective, reflecting on what makes it a community. My fundamental concept of a community was that it was just a group of individuals who lived in the same town or who shared something in common. According to our textbook (McKenzie, 2016, p. 5), a community is "a collective body of individuals identified by common characteristics such as geography, interests, experiences, concerns, or values". My thought approach was correct, however I forgot to identify the precise characteristics that define a community. A community is defined by the National Institutes of Health as "a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, share common perspectives, and engage in joint action in geographical locations or settings". My understanding of this is that you can establish a community in virtually any place as long as there is variety and engagement in that location. In this instance, I consider myself to be a member of several different communities. My church is the first and most important community in which I consider myself to be a member and participate. It is an important part of who I am; I attend my youth group on Friday nights with other young adults my age. Our shared perspective or social bond is to join together in fellowship to honor and praise God. My work community is another community to which I belong. This community is very diverse among the workers, and our common goal in the workplace is to work together to help bridge the opportunity gap among students in underserved communities by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, and leadership skills for life success. These are some of the communities that I believe to be a part of yet have influenced my life. The Bible uses scripture verses to discuss communities. A verse that pertains to this theme is Hebrews 10:24-25, "And let us consider one another to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembly of ourselves together, as some do, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching" (NKJV). We must uplift our communities and care for each individual inside them.
