Emily Pigg Philosophy of Education Children learn best and feel more comfortable when they are in a situation where they feel loved and wanted. Education facilities, schools, daycare, summer camps, etc., should be a place where children want to go to learn not only academically but also socially. John Dewey’s idea that children learn best through social interaction is something that I strongly agree with and feel like many educators should understand. Schools should be a place where students feel they are able to explore new findings without facing judgment. Education facilities should be a safe space for students. Education needs to be challenging for students to make sure they are still engaging in the curriculum and using problem-solving skills. Students should feel that they are able to make a mistake and not be made fun of but be encouraged to problem solve to find the correct answer. Challenging students will not only allow them to build their academic skills but give the students a chance to make a solid foundation to build relationships with those in the classroom: students, teachers, and faculty members. Schools should be exclusive spaces where all students are involved. Every type of learning strategy should be incorporated into the lessons to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to understand the curriculum at the same base level. The different learning strategies visual, auditory, written, and kinesthetic allow every student to have a fair chance when it comes to learning. It is important for me to incorporate these different types of learning into my classroom because I know that not every person learns the same way and it is not fair to the students if their learning type is excluded from the lesson. Teachers' main priority should be wanting to see their students be successful.
Keeping the idea of incorporating multiple learning styles into the lesson will translate over to the curriculum being introduced to the students in ways that are able to be understood but that will still challenge the students. Curriculum needs to be challenging in order to keep up students' academic skills so that they can improve. Multiple resources should be provided to students to ensure that no one is getting left behind when it comes to learning. This could be small group instruction, peer tutoring, partner work, or reteaching of a topic. As a teacher, my goal is to ensure that I can provide all the resources to my students to give them the best shot possible with the information. I believe that learning should be primarily student-driven and I plan to primarily be a facilitator of learning in my classroom. On top of that, I will be incorporating Dewey’s philosophy of education when it comes to students and social interaction. I believe it is very important for students to have social interaction because it allows the students' ideas to be challenged and be able to build a better foundation for what they are learning. Hands-on experiences will be encouraged in my classroom so that students are able to get a base visual and realistic experience with the topic before we explore the other learning styles. With the learning being student-driven it will cause the students to take ownership of their learning because they are now more involved, this teaching style aligns with Aristotle's philosophy of education. Taking ownership will encourage the students to continue to engage and seek real-world applications. Education equips students with the skills necessary to have a successful educational career and their future. I believe the purpose of education is to encourage students to explore and apply academic content to circumstances outside of the classroom. This makes the students think deeper about what they have learned and tie their own personal interests to the curriculum. Using
this deeper understanding and tying personal interest allows students to develop more advanced skills in their education. Students develop problem-solving skills that are able to be applied to everyday situations. These skills are learned inside the classroom through academic struggles as well as social struggles. Educational environments should be inclusive environments to develop collaboration skills. This being a driving force is why Dewey’s idea of social interaction is so important. Society revolves around social interaction and connections and the base is important to be learned at a young age when children are in a safe environment, schools. When I have my own classroom and my own students my goal is to provide a safe environment for students where they feel that they can thrive academically and socially. I believe it is important to provide effective communication with not only the students but also the parents to allow for teamwork to be present. It is important to have both parties involved in seeing the student succeed. In order to build a relationship with students to create teamwork it is important to let the students know that they are protected and heard when they are in my classroom. I will praise students who push them to do their best while also challenging the students because everyone can always grow. No matter what level the students are on, I find it important to praise all students even if it is a small accomplishment that they had. I plan to provide meaningful instruction to my students and try to incorporate their interests as much as possible. John Dewey argued that learning should be centered around students' interests, so the more I can get my students involved the better they will be at receiving and comprehending the information. Lastly, my main priority is to provide a solid foundation of education for my students to grow and develop for many years after they are in my classroom.
