Daniella Trujillo Sailors, Pam. “Mixed Competition and Mixed Messages.”
Key Question: What are the four distinctions sailor says are relevant to consider whether competition should be segregated by sex?
In the reading by Pam R. Sailors mentioned that although there have been arguments regarding the issue of sex segregation in athletics nothing has been done to change any
issues or continue the talk of what should be done, what is right or wrong. The question I am answering is: What are the four distinctions sailor says are relevant to
consider whether competition should be segregated by sex. One of the distinctions is individual vs team sport ( Sailors, 73) this may be the easiest way for people to accept women and men in the same category since it would not be a one on one competition but a group effort like coed sports. Secondly is direct or indirect competition (Sailors, 74), this would be looking at each sport and how physically challenging it is, such as football and basketball would be more of a challenge for men and women to play together this is why these sports are segregated. But this is not saying women can’t compete with men but more for protecting women since this would be more physical and this can cause more harm. Third is contact sports vs non-contact sports (Sailors, 74) the points they discuss are sports such as boxing and rugby like tennis or track and field. Finally the last distinction is between amateur sports vs professional sports ( sailors, 74). This can have a lot of different factors such as the goals, the level of competition, how this would not be like actual games that involve money or have players that have been playing for years. The goal of not only these distinctions but what is being argued is not to diminish womens sports or their place in mens sports but
what should be done going forward and how we can continue these conversations. It is important to note how they mention “co-ed teams would offer an opportunity to avoid ‘contamination’” ( Sailors, 74). The four distinctions that were mentioned are popular topics that would be brought up while arguing about segregation and sports and are relevant to today and the future of sports. My question after answering the questions and analyzing the reading is what are some ways we can promote women's sports, if women and men can’t play together what is a way we can equally promote them and not sports a male dominated subject.
