Hello Class, Because there are so many different arguments for and against legalizing prostitution, this week's topic has many facets. I can honestly say that I am unsure of what stance I take during this discussion. Pimps and sex traffickers seem to thrive because the sex business is ‘underground’ and there are no regulations. Sex workers may feel safer going to the police if they do not fear being prosecuted and going to jail. Legalization may also keep sex workers healthier by having regulations on condoms, birth control, and being regularly tested for sexually transmitted infections. To continue on with the pros of why it should be legalized, the economy would greatly benefit from increased revenue gains as it would be taxed like any other business. On the other hand, one of the biggest arguments for why prostitution should not be legalized is that many believe it is morally wrong and that it undermines normal human relationships. Because women make up the vast majority of sex workers, legalizing prostitution would reinforce women's oppression in male-dominated societies and be a blatant violation of the idea of gender equality. Legalizing prostitution also encourages men to have multiple sexual partners, which increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections, especially because condom policies may not be followed. Prostitution is legal and regulated in the Netherlands and has been since 2000. As long as it involves two consenting adults, it is legal. In addition, the term rape was redefined in 2020 with the passing of the "Sexual Offences Act," which now includes all sexual acts performed against the will of the victim. Although prostitution is legal in this country, an alarming amount of human trafficking is talked about, with the majority of victims being underage Dutch girls. Last week I made a goal to conduct more outside research and not just rely on our weekly content. I feel like I was successful in finding outside reliable articles that helped me conduct my legal analysis this week.
