Chapters 1, 2 and 3 Review Questions Directions: Please answer the following questions fully. Please use the format provided each time you do Review Questions. The questions should be in black and the answers should be in red . Please use the font Times New Roman with a font size of 10 or 11. You do not need to write answers in complete sentences, but please make sure you give enough information to answer the questions and to help you study for your exams. I would also like you to put the page number where you found the answers in your textbook if it asks. This will help you find more information and study for the exam. If you do not follow this format I will not grade your assignment. If the question asks for 3 things, please number and then write out your answers so it is easier to grade. Chapter 1 1. Why is it important to study multicultural health? Pg #3 Answer: It is important to study multicultural health because there are many cultural similarities as well as differences which are essential for delivering effective health care services. We need to recognize and respect people with different health beliefs and practices. 2. Explain what health disparities are and their causes. Pg #12-13 Answer: Health disparities are differences in health outcomes and their determinants between segments of the population defined by social, demographic, environmental and geographic attributes. They are caused by historic trauma, social disadvantages, or discrimination. 3. Describe the key intentions of the Civil Rights Act and the Hill-Burton Act. Pg #21 Answer: The key intentions are it established a national priority against discrimination in the use of federal funds, authorized federal agencies to establish standards of nondiscrimination and provided for enforcement by withholding funds or by any other means authorized by law. Hill-Burton Act required facilities to provide services to persons living within the service area without discrimination based on race, national origin, color, creed or any other reasons. Chapter 2 1. Explain three overarching theories about the causes of illness. Pg #33-36 Answer: Personalistic theory – illness believed to be caused by the person’s misbehavior. Naturalistic theory – views health as a state of harmony between the person and his/her environment; when the balance is upset, illness occurs. Biomedical theory- mechanical or machine view of the body; when the machine breaks, illness occurs. 2. Explain the two overarching systems of care in the United States and their differences. Pg #36 Answer: Biomedical approach – viewed as being scientific and focuses more on the physical components of illness. Medicine is a counteragent. Holistic medicine – viewed as being unscientific based on psychosocial model of health care. Medicine is a coagent.
3. Explain the components of the process of cultural competence in the delivery of health care services model. Pg #40 Answer: Cultural awareness – reflecting on your own biases toward other cultures and exploring one’s cultural and professional background Cultural knowledge – health care professionals seek and obtain information base regarding the worldviews of different cultural and ethnic groups Cultural skill – ability to conduct a cultural assessment to collect relevant cultural data regarding the client’s problem Cultural encounter – health care professional engages in face-to-face cultural interactions and other types of encounters with clients from diverse backgrounds to modify existing beliefs and preventing possible stereotyping Cultural desire – health care professionals want to engage with clients to become culturally aware, knowledgeable, skillful and seek cultural encounters 4. List ways (at least 3) to improve cultural competence within an organization. Pg #42 & 48 Answer: Maximize diversity among the workforce Provide ongoing training to staff members Assess customer satisfaction and clinical outcomes regularly Chapter 3 1. Explain some beginning and end of life decisions related to worldview and culture. Pg #52 & 60-61 Answer: Worldviews are beliefs and assumptions by which an individual can make sense of experiences and cultures are built on that. Some cultures handle end of life decisions differently than others such as some view in appropriate to cry, sob or wail loudly while some require you to control your grief and be stoic in public. 2. What is fate versus free will? Pg #55 Answer: Free will – people believe that they are the masters of their own lives; Fate – people believe that are subject to events outside their control Which one do you feel you believe in your everyday life? I’m kind of in between when it comes to this because I believe that your decisions do affect your life, but it is also already written in the stars what will happen 3. Are you an organ donor (do you have it checked on your license)? Why or why not is this your choice? No, I am not because I was told growing up that if you mark that on your license, they do not try to revive you and essentially wait for you to pass so that they can use your organs. 4. What is an advance directive, living will and durable power of attorney? Do you have any of these? Why or why not? Have you talked to your parents or your significant others about these? (Explain) Pg #62 Answer: Advance directive – legal documents that enable a person to convey his/her decisions about end-of-life care ahead of time Living will – set of instructions that documents a person’s wishes about medical care intended to sustain life Durable power of attorney – for health care it is a document that names your health care representative who can speak for you when you cannot.
I have looked into these things once a few of my closest friends have passed away, but have not set them up because it is something tough to think about. I have talked to my parents about these things, but they do not have anything in writing.
