Jonathan Price BUSINESS ETHICS — C717 EKP1 — EKP TASK 2: ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITIES As the ethics officer in the scenario, I will address the following: Rights and Responsibilities of Employees: a. Right to a Safe Workplace: Employees have the right to work in an environment free from hazards that could cause them harm. This includes physical safety as well as psychological safety, protecting them from discrimination, harassment, and other forms of mistreatment. b. Responsibility to Uphold Company Policies: Employees have a responsibility to follow company policies and ethical guidelines. This includes honesty, integrity, and respect for colleagues. They should also report any unethical behavior’s that they encounter. c. Right to Privacy: Employees have the right to a reasonable level of privacy in the workplace. This includes the confidentiality of personal information and communications, provided it does not interfere with legitimate business interests. Ethical Responsibilities of the Employer: a. Providing Equal Opportunities: Employers have an ethical responsibility to ensure equal opportunities for all employees regardless of race, gender, age, or other characteristics. This involves promoting diversity and inclusion and preventing discrimination. b. Fair Compensation: Employers should provide fair and equitable compensation, including benefits, to employees. This responsibility involves ensuring that employees receive a wage that enables a reasonable quality of life and that their compensation is in line with their contributions. Ethical Business Dilemma: You are a marketing executive who discovers that your colleague is engaging in unethical practices to gain an advantage in bringing in new business. Your colleague is a close friend outside of work. Reporting your friend's unethical actions could jeopardize their career, but not reporting it could damage your company's reputation and possibly lead to adverse consequences for your team. Evaluation of the Dilemma: Utilitarian Perspective: Reporting the unethical behavior would likely result in the greatest overall good, as it helps maintain the company's ethical standards, integrity, and reputation, benefiting most stakeholders, including employees, clients, and shareholders. Relativistic Perspective: The relativistic perspective would consider the cultural and personal sides. In some cultures, loyalty to a friend might outweigh the ethical responsibility to report. However, in a corporate setting, the prevailing ethical norms and obligations are typically seen more influential on individuals than personal relationships. Common Ethical Decisions in Corporate Settings: a. Whistleblowing: Employees may discover unethical practices within their organization and face the dilemma of whether to report them. Reporting may lead to personal consequences, including retaliation or job loss.
