2 Personal Code of Ethical Communication Preamble Communication is the most basic of Human Rights everyone must be able discuss their concerns, problems, and or point of views. Ethical communication is the key to progression in life and human kind. By being committed to ethical communication Iwill not waist time, offend others, or spread misinformation I am committed to this for the betterment of my life and of those I interact with. My personal code for ethical communication is built on these ten principles. Principles I advocate truthfulness, accuracy, honesty, and reason as essential to the integrity of communication. (Tompkins, 2019) I strive to understand and respect other communicators before evaluating and responding to their message. (Tompkins, 2019) I accept responsibility for the short- and long-term consequences for my own communications and expect the same from others. (Tompkins, 2019) I must allow the other party or parties to complete their turn prior to stating my inputs. Everyone despite age, race, sex, religion, or any other differences has their time to express themselves. Communication is held with compassion for one another. I must not judge people base on their opinion. I must remember it is a honor to communicate with others for the betterment of our lives. I must have courage to put aside my prenotions and biases to understand the other communicators. I must be committed to the process.
3 Most of my principles I have went by without ever naming them as my principles. They just align with how I want to live my life according how I was raised and by trial and error. My first three principles are pulled from the National Communication Association. My fourth through seventh principles are built from issues where I have personally seen communication break downs happen causing more problems than I would ever want to deal with. My final three I built from the Navy core values Honor, Courage, and Commitment after fifteen years those three word can be applied to a lot of my ethical values. I never put much thought in what I said or how I said until two major events in my life and career. The first being the birth of my son being responsible for another life and having show and teach them how to live and be an ethical person. According to Kohlberg’s Six Stage of Moral Development your child’s moral development starts around age four. (Wilber, 2018) As a parent I think they start playing the game a lot earlier because when your two year old tells you “ Dada love you cookie,” or drops a four letter word public that will make you think about your actions and word choice when you stub your toe. Now that my children are a little older ten and five they are starting to establish their self’s and these will be traits they carry with them their entire lives. The second event was when I was put in charge of twenty young men and our job was to keep the mechanical systems on a submarine working in optimum condition at all times. This is where I learned the most, because without proper communication your day can go bad real fast. When you work on the wrong equipment for six hours and you then have to do it again on the other equipment again. I also found out that when your guys felt valued you get way better results in a shorter amount of time which leads to shorter work days and more liberty for my guys. Which made them happier and producing great work it became a machine that continued feeding itself, and all I had to do was sit down with my team every morning and discuss with

4 them what we have do get done and big upcoming evolutions. Prior to us breaking from our meeting every single person had the chance to give their input. The majority of the times they came up with the plans on how to complete the jobs. In short, I apply these without ever really noticing them or naming them. As far as how specifically will apply them in the future I do not know because it will depend on the audience. I know I will continue to because according to studies “ Failing to communicate ethically can impact business relationships negatively as it indicates a lack of respect for the person, calls into question one's personal integrity, and makes people question the reliability and credibility of the individual.” (Ethical Communication in the Workplace, 2017) References Ethical Communication in the Workplace.
