Philosophy of science is the groundwork
for theory development and, without it, critical components are
missed, such as inductive and deductive ways of thinking,
empiricism, rationalism, and theories of truth.
What is a philosophy of nursing? why does Magnet ask health care organizations to define their philosophy?
A philosophy of nursing is a nurse’s description of what they feel is important, what they think is
morally acceptable, ideas that they feel to be true and what made them pursue the nursing occupation (University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, 2021). A nurse’s way of providing care and perfecting skills in their field that he/she value all derives from their own nursing philosophy. I believe a nursing philosophy and nursing theories go hand in hand. Butts and Lundy (2003) state that Philosophy of science is the groundwork for theory development and without it critical components are missed such as inductive and deductive ways of thinking, empiricism, rationalism, and theories of truth. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA), established the Magnet Nursing Services Recognition Program in 1992 (Johnson & Billingsley, 2014). The term Magnet is used to describe the characteristics of nursing
practice identified by the study that accounted for these hospitals’ success in attracting and keeping a staff of well-qualified nurses (Morgan et al., 2006). Health organizations have been asked by Magnet to have a nursing philosophy in place. Having a nursing philosophy in place helps lead their nursing employees through the responsibilities that are required of them. It also helps the organization to advance further in many assets.
I have worked in a Women’s hospital and have had the opportunity to work in different areas ranging from newborn nursery, antepartum, labor and delivery to womens triage. My own nursing philosophy is willingness to advance in education and enhance current knowledge. This nursing philosophy has made a great impact in my life by motivated me to further my education.
