Hello classmates and Dr. Borre' After reading the assigned chapters in this week's lesson, I found that Transformational leadership (TL) aligns with my personal philosophy and nursing theory. Transformational leadership is a term many hear a great deal in the healthcare industry and found as one of the most efficient leadership styles applied in healthcare. Becoming aware of a transformational approach is beneficial for career development, unit retention and quality of patient care however, what is Transformational leadership and what does it do for nursing? Transformational leadership is identified as style leadership that empowers the team to achieve and function at their highest level. It involves a leader who can connect emotionally with their team while giving their colleagues autonomy and authority. Ultimately it is helping one to become the greatest version of themselves. It is found that an individual is motivated and inspired intrinsically when working with a leader or practices transformational leadership. Transformational leadership cultivates a healthy enviornment, creating a positive effect on employee satisfaction, engagement, and practice (Gebreheat et al., 2023). While my specialty track is in Nurse Education, transformational leadership style is highly applicable to my current and future role. Healthcare has remained as a team sport, relying on a team dynamic approach and skills to collaborate with many healthcare disciplines to combat challenges. It is found that many nurses struggle personally with themselves and establishing an integral aspect of a team player. Supporting the framework of a transformational leadership style is one opportunity for establishing a team-focused faculty culture. This gives nurse educators the opportunity to increase TFL competencies among health care administrators, nurse faculty, nurses and students (Fischer, 2020) In my current role as a Registered Nurse, I identify myself as an informal leader. Formal leaders are recognized as the head of a group or organization with the responsibility to make clinical decisions, direct resources, and operations, leading to profitability. For example, a Nurse Executive, Patient Care Director, Unit Managers, Chiefs of nursing are all great examples of formal leaders. Informal leaders are experienced individuals that are recognized for their knowledge and guidance. Informal Leaders do not hold an official status as a leader of an organization or group however, others look up to informal leaders as a leading force. Informal Leaders earn their status by developing strong connections with their team, proving themselves through actions, to be trustworthy, reliable, and a mentor. Personally, I exemplify as an IL, collaborating effectively amongst my team. I understand the importance of a strong team dynamic, leading to efficient outcomes for the patient and industry. I serve as a mentor and preceptor for novice and expert nurses, allowing one to share their concerns or ideas in their time of need. I currently participate with the Shared Governance Committee as the appointed leader for Nurse Retention. This gives me the opportunity to identify disparities, researching the identified issue and developing a resolution to retain our staff. In my future MSN role, I understand that there are many consequences that positively impact the healthcare industry and the population. Future implications that I find valuable are focusing on enhancing patient safety and quality of care. It is important to focus on updating current curriculums and offering continuing education for our healthcare team and population. I will offer support and
continuing mentor programs for colleagues. Remaining as a mentor for our team will add to their professional growth, knowledge and can make one feel valuable leading to higher job satisfaction. Fostering these implications can also be used in the community to improve health access and offer a variety of resources to the public for awareness. My goal is to encourage one to be the change for better outcomes in the industry. I understand that the expert in everything was once a beginner.
