According to the Catholic natural law tradition, morality is instinctual in mankind and can be established (Beckwith, 2021). While, the autonomy tradition upholds that a competent person should be allowed to make their own choice in medical decisions and the freedom in moral decisions (Miller School of Medicine, 2023). In contrast to the autonomy tradition, which considers the patient's rights, Daniel P. Sulmasy, MD, phD claims that the Catholic natural law tradition can offer a more comprehensive explanation of informed consent because it considers the moral duties and obligations of both patients and healthcare providers. The emphasis placed by the Catholic natural law tradition on the fundamental worth of human life and the greater good. He also mentions that it is a more thorough and sophisticated interpretation of informed consent. For this discussion post, I have been reading several educational resources and think that the autonomy tradition is more in line with today's contemporary ethical principles and values. The Catholic natural law tradition may seem restrictive because of the reliance on natural law and objective moral principles. An example would be respect for individual rights and freedom of choice, I understand that some people like myself may disagree with Sulmasy's claim that the Catholic natural law tradition can offer a better account of informed consent. I will disagree with the notion that the Church should have a direct say in healthcare decisions. I will mention that the autonomy tradition highlights individual rights and freedom of choice. It is able to accommodate a variety and complexity of moral dilemmas that emerge in the field of healthcare. And it is a more adaptable and responsive approach to informed consent. However, both traditions have their advantages and disadvantages. It really is up to the competent person to decide what they want to do based on their personal moral values and beliefs.
