Do you think, as a society, we blame/shame those who are overweight or obese for their
condition and too often assume obesity is just an issue of poor personal choices about foods
and exercise? Explain your answer.
Yes, I do think, as a society, we tend to assume obesity is just an issue of poor food
choices that an individual made or lack of exercise, but in a real sense, obesity can be attributed
to different factors; hence, there is no need to shame or blame those who are overweight. Based
on class notes this week, internal factors like metabolic functioning and genes contribute to
obesity. External factors like environmental cues, stress, food access, and built environment
cause obesity. Therefore, making assumptions that people who are overweight are weak-willed,
lazy, unintelligent, unsuccessful, have poor willpower, and lack discipline is wrong because
obesity is not just an issue of poor personal choices about food and exercise.
What was your reaction to the video? What specific stories or examples about the negative
impact of stigma made an impression on you?
When I watched the video, I thought those individuals who accepted to be interviewed
for this documentary were brave. Not only did they bravely admit that they were hurt and lonely,
but they also sent a strong message to the rest of the public to treat them as equal human beings
who deserve respect and kindness and not being reminded that they are overweight because they
already live this reality daily. Stories about the negative impact of the stigma that made an
impression on me include the one where the woman decided not to seek medical care anymore
because the doctor said he could not deal with her. Also, seeing how debilitating stigma is on all
the different people who took part in this podcast made me feel really sad, especially the lady
who said it isn't easy, taking up so much room. Being discriminated against at work, in
relationships , at the doctor's office, and at home lowers their self-esteem, which is sad for people
with obesity.
