Why Cultural Humility must be Practiced Within Larger Organizations
Cultural humility is an important construct for understanding and developing a process-
oriented approach to competency. It encourages individuals to recognize their own biases and
assumptions, while also recognizing the strengths of others in different cultures. The concept
helps create an environment of open dialogue and mutual respect between people from different
backgrounds, allowing them to work together more effectively towards achieving shared goals.
Additionally, cultural humility can help community health workers better understand how their
beliefs may influence decisions or interactions with those from other cultures, helping them
develop strategies tailored specifically for each situation they encounter.
Everyone must go beyond individual efforts of self-critique and evaluation and begin to
advocate within larger organizations while building meaningful partnerships with people and
groups who advocate for others. The process involves recognizing one’s own cultural biases and
developing a willingness to learn from other cultures, as well as respecting the values,
perspectives, beliefs, and experiences of those we engage with. By striving to understand another
person’s culture on their terms rather than ours, we can foster more equitable relationships that
promote greater understanding between individuals or communities. Ultimately this will enable
us to create stronger connections, leading to improved outcomes for all involved in these
advocacy efforts.
Cultural humility is a concept that requires community health workers and individuals
within society to take an active role in advocating for it systemically. It involves being aware of
our own cultural biases, recognizing and respecting the beliefs and values of others, and
understanding how power dynamics influence interactions between people from different

backgrounds. Understanding cultural humility as a concept that must be advocated systemically,
it can help to increase the effectiveness of a community health worker who, in return, must
actively engage in conversations and develop programs to deal with social justice issues that
disproportionately affect marginalized communities. Besides, they can also begin challenging
oppressive systems within institutions that, over the years, have resulted in health disparities and
inequities.
Importantly, they actively begin to support policies designed to promote equity and
inclusion, all while continuing to educate themselves on the various aspects of the culture they
might not be familiar with. Additionally, it makes them begin to actively listen with empathy
when interacting with members from other cultures as an important way to demonstrate their
commitment towards achieving greater understanding across cultures through advocacy work at
their respective organizations. Ultimately, cultural humility is essential for creating an equitable
society where everyone can thrive without fear or prejudice.
In conclusion, the statement that we must not only fully commit to the pursuit of cultural
humility through self-critique and self-evaluation but also advocate within the larger
organizations serves as a reminder that true commitment towards pursuing cultural humility
requires personal reflection on one's own biases and external advocacy efforts aimed at making
institutional changes that promote equity amongst diverse populations. By implementing these
strategies, community health workers will be better equipped to serve different populations
effectively while fostering meaningful relationships built upon mutual respect and understanding.
