6 Parents are a wealth of ethical and moral values through dedication to fairness, justice, and faith; mine are no exception. They have consistently shown the ability to resolve conflicts peacefully, manage their emotions effectively, and exercise self-discipline. Witnessing their conduct has inspired me to cultivate self-control, honesty, self-discipline, and responsibility for my actions and contribute to the community. These values have influenced my ethical decision- making as a leader, and I have transferred them to my children. I strive to lead by example, upholding principles of honesty, fairness, and ethics in my personal and professional life. The ethical teachings and values instilled in individuals during childhood, whether by family or through other social interactions, play a crucial role in shaping their moral compass. As leaders, drawing on these fundamental human values when making ethical decisions is essential, as they form the basis for trustworthy and effective leadership. Leadership proficiency can intensify from the perspective of the ordinary citizen. Leadership ethics relies on fundamental principles, including fairness, integrity, honesty, transparency, and trustworthiness. (Lakshmi, 2014). As a Media Coordinator, I have made decisions that conflicted with my beliefs but aimed to benefit the student community. For instance, procuring books related to LGBTQ+ topics. While I may not support this lifestyle, I value individuals' freedom to live as they choose, including our students. Therefore, it is essential to acquire books that promote inclusivity and comfort for them. Leadership involves the leader guiding others toward a shared objective; in this case, it is student literacy. The influential aspect of leadership necessitates the leader significantly impacting the individuals they lead. Effecting change in others comes with ethical weight and duty. Leaders typically wield more authority and influence than followers, so they must also be more conscious of how leadership impacts followers' lives (Northouse, 2022). As we navigate through life, we encounter various individuals who shape our understanding of ethics and morality. These important people in our lives, such as parents, teachers, and others, serve as role models and influence our personal code of ethics and our definition of right and wrong. Observing their approach to ethical and moral decision-making teaches us valuable lessons that stay with us throughout our lives. From a young age, I was fortunate to have several significant relationships that exemplified strong ethics and morality. My parents, for instance, consistently demonstrated honesty, integrity, and compassion in their interactions with others. They instilled in me the importance of treating everyone with respect and fairness, regardless of their background or circumstances. Their unwavering commitment to doing what is right, even in difficult situations, left a lasting impression on me. Both my mother and father worked hard, often two, even three, jobs in order to pay the monthly bills. Watching my role models work hard every day helped develop a strong work ethic, which has propelled me into this program.
My teachers also played a crucial role in shaping my understanding of ethics. They not only taught me academic knowledge but also emphasized the importance of integrity and responsibility. They fostered an environment that encouraged open discussions about ethical dilemmas and the consequences of our actions, even when those consequences were not appreciated by a “certain” unruly teenager. By leading by example and making ethical choices, although I may not have known it at the time, they showed me that doing the right thing is not always easy, but it is essential for personal growth and the betterment of society (Lakshmi, 2014). Observing these important individuals allowed me to understand the complexities of ethical decision-making. I learned that ethical choices require thoughtful consideration of the potential impact on others and the greater good. It taught me the significance of empathy and considering different perspectives before making a decision. Furthermore, I realized that ethical decision-making is not a one-time event but an ongoing process that requires continuous evaluation and reflection. Sometimes, ethical decision-making is downright difficult. As a leader, my early experiences with ethical role models have a profound impact on my decision-making. They have shaped my values, guiding principles, and the way I approach ethical dilemmas. The lessons I learned from observing my parents and teachers have influenced my leadership style, emphasizing the importance of transparency, fairness, and integrity in all my actions. I employ this as department chair of the Social Studies Department at my school. If I have an issue that needs addressing, I do so face-to-face, with my colleagues. I deal with them honestly, as I would certainly expect in return. As Gonzales (2019) mentions there are times when ethical decisions are difficult, such as times when “right versus right” decisions leaves someone unhappy. In these situations I lean on my knowledge of the school policy and take responsibility for the understanding that sometimes not everyone will come away from a situation, pleased with the outcome.
