Abortion
The selection of abortion as a topic is anchored on the fact that it is one of the major
controversies that has two groups arguing. The argument on whether or not to legalize abortion
can only be compared to that of religion and women’s employment. Most people including
professionals are divided on the issue influenced by the inability to determine whether the fetus
in the woman’s womb can be regarded as human-life so that it becomes either legal, or illegal to
terminate. The discussion below is an elaboration on the reason abortion is a sensitive and a
conflicting issue within the contemporary society.
Relevance of Selecting the Issue
The relevance of selecting abortion as a controversial topic is anchored on the fact that it
is the only issue that touches on all the sources of human ethics. The controversy touches on
moral, legal, medical, and religious aspects making it the most visible model of polarizing the
country into pro-choice and pro-life. More discussion on the issue can contribute to knowing
whether to accept abortion, or to ban it as one of the leading forms of murder.
Issue within the Healthcare facility
Within the healthcare facility, abortion becomes an issue influenced by the complications
that are likely to occur after implementing the procedure. Additionally, it is unethical to force a
pro-life healthcare provider to complete an abortion procedure without their consent. As a result,
within the healthcare facility, abortion is a challenging debate especially since it is a risky
procedure on the reproductive and physical health of the woman patient (Simkulet, 2022).
Conflict on safety and quality care of the patient is, therefore, likely to arise within the healthcare
facility.

Supporting and Opposing arguments for abortion
Those that support the legalization of abortion, also known as pro-choice, argue that
abortion is part of emphasizing the woman’s right to bodily autonomy. It is illegal to deny people
the autonomy of what they can do with their bodies (Blackshaw & Hendricks, 2021). The
opposing argument, also known as pro-life, argue that the fetus is human and is deserving of
legal protection despite the will of the mother. As an individual, it is better to support the pro-life
argument.
Value development
The reason I have developed the opposing argument is influenced on having a
background of religion and medical ethics. Demands of religion and medical ethics, influence
personal ethics and professional choices. In conclusion, value development on controversial
issues are influenced by professional and cultural backgrounds.
