A - I was raised by two Vietnamese immigrants in a low-income household and was constantly led to believe that happiness could be bought with money. We lacked the one thing that would have been the answer to our problems: money. I can have all the money in the world, but it could never acquire my "happiness." My mother, who is the epitome of wealth, has always been content with her marriage. She has all the money in the world, money that supposedly could buy her ‘happiness’, yet all the money she threw towards her marriage, it only leE her unhappy, so there my epiphany occurred, money can’t buy happiness because it is a state of mind rather than a possession that can be bought. B – Money has never been able to heal or give me that 'happy' fi x' that everyone swore it would o ff er me during the many unfortunate blimps in my life. The primary cause of my skepLcism was witnessing the breakdown of my parents' marriage. How could two individuals try to save something that was obviously making them drown in their own sadness and spend an absurd amount of money doing it? Their marriage was intended to be fi xed with the help of that money, bringing them to the height of their happiness. Instead, it did the exact opposite, making life exhausLng for both them and me. C – The common belief that "money buy happiness" comes from less fortunate populaLons for whom money can help them get out of a slump. However, money does not bring happiness because it is unsaLsfactory. Money can never be more than a band-aid soluLon. AddiLonally, individuals sLll hold onto this belief because, in their eyes, money takes care of their needs—bills, a roof over their heads, and food on the table. In this situaLon, the economy of the naLon of believers comes out on top. They are so commiQed to this idea that they labor day and night to earn every dollar they can, puRng the country's economy ahead of their own. They are giving up their enjoyment of life in exchange for money, disproving the idea that happiness can be purchased. Speaking from my experience, I spent the most of my adolescent years working long hours while juggling school because I thought it would make me happier, but my happiness comes from within. Family Lme, hanging out with friends, or simply being able to sit down and watch the sunset are all free acLviLes that make me happy.
