2 Ethics and Contemporary Issues: Project Topic Selection Introduction: My chosen topic for this project is "The merits of building of walls immigration policy." I have opted to look into the ethical rationale and considerations of the building of walls as an immigration policy. The issue of immigration has been a contentious and polarizing one in recent times; and the proposed and actual building of walls to border countries has become a popular means of attempting to control the flow of immigrants. This topic is relevant to the discussion of ethics in contemporary issues, as it raises numerous ethical questions and dilemmas. Ethical Dilemmas: The building of walls as an immigration policy raises a number of ethical dilemmas, especially to the governments, the citizens and the affected immigrants. Some questions raised by this policy include the implications of the building of walls for human rights, the moral explanations of preventing people from entering a country, the ramifications for global economic disparities, and the impact of the building of walls on relations between various nations. Additionally, using walls to control immigration raises questions regarding the effectiveness of such a policy, and whether or not it is a humane and ethical way to manage immigration. Theoretical Basis: Aristotle, for instance, might have argued that erecting walls as an immigration policy are necessary to preserve the stability of a society. He would likely cite the need for individuals to be part of a political community in order to lead a good life, and the need for borders to protect the community from external threats. On the other hand, Aquinas might have argued that walls are a form of injustice, as they deny people the opportunity to pursue
3 their own good. He may also have argued that walls lead to further injustice, as they force people to live in poverty due to their limited access to resources and opportunities. Locke, meanwhile, may have argued that walls are an unjust restriction of people's natural rights to move freely and pursue their own happiness. Quality Source: Source: Hidalgo, J. S. (2018). Unjust borders: Individuals and the ethics of immigration . Routledge. This source focuses on the ethical implications of immigration policy and the construction of walls to restrict immigration. Specifically, Hidalgo (2018) argues that building walls is ethically wrong because it often violates basic human rights, particularly the right to migrate and seek refuge in other countries. He also examines the economic and political implications of immigration policy and argues that walls often lead to economic inequality, political instability, and human suffering. This source is particularly relevant to my project paper entitled "The Merits of Building Walls Immigration Policy" because it provides a comprehensive ethical analysis of the issue. Hidalgo 's (2018) argument is grounded in an ethical framework that emphasizes respect for human rights and the importance of economic and political stability. He provides a detailed examination of the potential consequences of immigration policy and makes a strong case against the construction of walls to restrict immigration. This article provides an important ethical consideration that should be taken into account when discussing the merits of immigration policy.
