During my research to find an existing tool to help address my research question, I was faced with a few challenges. My topic at hand is to find out if a multifactorial approach to fall interventions can decrease fall rates in those 65 and older versus those who receive the usual care of a single or no intervention at all. While many studies are aimed at this same question, most failed to mention the instrument they utilized when doing periodic and final follow-ups. In response to this, I will utilize an instrument that most closely meets the objective for the topic at hand with a few modifications. Physical body experiences questionnaire simplified for active aging (PBE-QAG) is a questionnaire that is focused on assessing the physical awareness of community-dwelling elderly participants (Deng, Carpentier, Van De Winkel, 2023). The questionnaire embodies seven different questions ranging from: How they feel about if the activity they partake in makes them feel satisfied Whether they are aware of their physical limitations If they are satisfied with their new physical abilities If they feel in tune with their body If they are ashamed of their body If they believe doing the physical activities gives them more strength If feeling in tune with their body and abilities makes them feel effective and productive The questions are where a few modifications will take place to meet the objective of the research study better. The questions will be altered to: I believe the fall interventions I have implemented based on my doctor's recommendation have helped decrease my risk for falling, I feel confident carrying out the specific interventions, I have fallen since starting the multiple interventions plan, Mastering these triads of interventions reduces my fear of falling,
I don’t need these interventions to help prevent me from falling again because I am in tune with my body and won’t fall, If I feel uncomfortable with an intervention I will follow-up with my ordering doctor as soon as possible to prevent falling. I am able to carry out the interventions detailed for me without issues Making these modifications to the questions helps to meet the objective in finding out if implementing a multifactorial approach has any effect on preventing falls in those 65 and older by assessing if they have fallen since starting the interventions specific to them as well as their comfortability and ability with the interventions, to address adherence. This modification does not change the level of measurement or change of scale, avoiding misinterpretation during result analysis. The PBE-QAG utilizes an ordinal level of measurement as it goes from, 0 being completely true, 1 being the neutral side of true and 2 being the neutral side of false, and lastly, 3 represents completely false (Deng, Carpentier, Van De Winkel, 2023). The scale used in this instrument is a Likert scale, as it has a ranking order of agreement as the options and has a numerical value. Each point is then added together, creating a summed total that can then be analyzed as interval-level data, allowing for a more dynamic statistical analysis of data (Gray et al., 2017). A benefit to this questionnaire is that it can be done at any point of the study, so it is appropriate for the follow-up at the 6-month mark and then the year mark evaluation (Gray et al., 2017). Data collection will be done at the participant's primary care follow-up as well as, over the phone utilizing the questions in the questionnaire. The follow-up for evaluation in progress will be done at the 6-month mark from intervention implementation and then again at the yearly mark that will conclude the study. Apart from the questionnaire, other data collection measures include interviewing family members or the caregivers of those who require care with daily needs. Unstructured interviewing allows for an informal and different perspective on data information as limitations may exist with the honesty the participant reveals during the follow-ups (Gray et al., 2017). Interviewing of the family members or
caregivers, this will be done during the same period of 6 and 12 months, in person and over the phone, to maintain consistency with the study and add to the qualitative data. I struggled with this section of the study to find an instrument to fit the objective; I look forward to feedback on this! References Deng, W., Carpentier, S., & Van De Winckel, A. (2023).
