Hospital Nightmare Recommendation Review Alexis, thank you so much for the opportunity to read and respond to your post. You did a fantastic job describing negligence and giving your recommendations in this case. I would like to further discuss your findings in this response. Negligence According to Miziara & Miziara (2022), negligence has suffered a transformation from patient's suing doctors for doing something wrong to now suing doctors for failing to do something right. Because of this, doctors have starting practicing “defensive medicine” in which the doctors tend to react with overdiagnosis and unnecessary surgeries that are harmful to patients because they are worried of the accusation of wrongdoing by patients or family (Miziara & Miziara, 2022). Recommendations In this scenario, you recommended that nurses and other healthcare staff need to know that they will not get fired for advocating for their patients and speaking up when something they observe is wrong. Lee et al. (2022) stated that nurses perceived speaking up as a challenging behavior, and they sometimes withhold their voices, even when speaking up is needed for patient safety. In their study the found that individual, organizational, and contextual factors affect speaking up behaviors and managers should create an environment that is supportive of staff speaking up (Lee et al., 2022). You also recommended the importance of documentation and debriefing about protocol and policy changes. This is a great recommendation because it may give managers the opportunity to show their support in speaking up behaviors amongst staff members. Lee et al. (2022) found that when managers demonstrated supportive behaviors, nurses did not perceive speaking up as risky or futile and felt as if they were psychologically safe to report events that were occurring. Biblical reference Proverbs 31:8-9 stated speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy (NIV, 2011). This verse is perfect for the scenario we are discussion. As a healthcare provider, I have been in situations that were extremely difficult to make the right decision, but ultimately, the patient must be the number one priority. It is not only a duty to perform for our job, but a duty to perform as children of God to defend those who cannot defend themselves.
