The practicum experience as, thus far, been very eye-opening for a few reasons. One reason is that it has shown me how many problems one can identify by doing some simple research and conducting a windshield survey. A second reason why it has been very eye-opening is that it has illustrated how much of a need there is for change in health care. Third, the experience so far has shown me the potential that advocacy has in making real change to benefit people in all populations, especially vulnerable populations. This practicum experience relates to Healthy People 2030 in two main ways. First, it shows how there are many areas of health that can be improved upon within a community, as Healthy People 2030 has several health-related topics where objectives and goals have been created to generate improvements in public health. Second, this experience focuses on hypertension, and this is important because it can make a person more at-risk for heart disease. And, heart disease is one of the topics that Healthy People 2030 discusses. Relating to heart disease, the Healthy People goal is to “Improve cardiovascular health and reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke” (Health.gov, 2023, p. 1). By reducing the prevalence of hypertension, the risk for heart disease can also decrease in the public in the aggregate community. The biggest event that has occurred within my practicum experience so far is the windshield survey. My thoughts and feelings about this are that it is amazing how much can be learned about a community by doing such a survey and that the findings of the survey will be useful in highlighting areas for improvement or change within the project. My perception has changed because now I am more aware of just how much has to change within the community. What I learned that was unexpected is how many resources there are that are not being utilized enough by people in the community to improve their health or to engage in hypertension prevention.
My thinking regarding the new learning I experienced are that it is a great opportunity for me to learn more about the community and to make a real difference within it. The biggest takeaway, thus far, in the practicum experience is how empowerment will be generated from this project. Through doing this, I am more empowered to make real change in the community than ever before. This experience is showing me how much power I have, which then indicates how much of a difference I can make in the lives of those in the community. References Health.gov. (2023).
