ELEMENTS OF NEGLIGENCE IN THE NURSING PROFESSION The chain of causation can be broken if an independent actor intervenes between the defendant's negligence and subsequent injury (Brous, 2020) DUTY OF CARE- The nurse should provide acceptable standard care to the patient. From the case study RN James forgot to document Prisha conversation and did not hand the information to the ward nurse accepting Prisha BREACH OF DUTY- Specific care that is needed in specific situations which the nurse do not observe. Failure by the Ward nurse to provide walking support to Prisha Kumar because of her challenges of cognitive and mobility was breach of duty FORESEE-ABILITY - a link should be proved between the injury suffered and the nurse. Prisha Kumar suffered injury because the ED nurse did not provide the requisite information to the ward nurse receiving Prisha Kumar leading to the injury suffered by the Prisha Kumar CAUSATION - As per Brous (2019), there has to be prove that injury occurred because the nurse did not follow the accepted standard care. The nurse on duty did not provide Prisha Kumar with walking support equipment required for patients with cognitive challenges HARM OR INJURY -The patient has to demonstrate some type of harm be it Financial, Physical or emotional. Prisha Kumar suffered physical injury when she felt down and fractured her right arm DAMAGE - The health care provider shall be held liable for damages that need to be compensated. RN James should held liable for the damages associated with Prisha Kumar injury Harm to a patient forms the basis of a malpractice case. Nurses must recognize incompetent, unethical consequences (Jacoby et al., 2017) ELEMENTS OF NEGLIGENCE in the nursing profession Duty Breach of duty Foresee-ability Causation Injury Damage AVOID NEGLIGENCE: BE responsible Name: Student Number
