WEEK 10 DISCUSSION 2 Week 10 Discussion The evidence-based practice aims to provide the best care available to patients and their families with the outcome of improved patient care and satisfaction. As a result, the evidence- based practice seeks the best possible methods and interventions to support these interventions and assessments, develop new practices, and refine policies (Broeder & Donze, 2010). In this regard, determining what is strong evidence and what is not is a difficult task. This is because both qualitative and quantitative research generates valuable knowledge that contributes to the development of nursing research in different ways. Evidence from qualitative research supports the experiential and personal experience that is critical for clinical practice. In contrast, the quantitative analysis offers empirical knowledge through experiments that are necessary for nursing practice. This implies that quantitative research provides its evidence through the experiences of the participants through narrations and stories, while quantitative analysis offers evidence through experiments and controlled environments. However, when it comes to rigor, one can argue that quantitative research is more rigorous compared to qualitative research because it incorporates the use of experiments and controlled environments. Nonetheless, nursing practice is more inclined to qualitative research because of its findings and methods emulate the art of nursing practice. In this regard, I believe both ways are equally crucial to the advancement of evidence-based practice and nursing practice. The primary aim of qualitative research is to deepen the meaning and understanding of the phenomenon under study. According to Broeder and Donze (2010), qualitative data and its findings are essential when describing or understanding an experience but not for precise answers or hypothesis testing. For instance, Molazem et al. (2016) examined the challenges nursing students face in the clinical learning environment. Jamshidi, Molazem, Sharif,
WEEK 10 DISCUSSION 3 Torabizadeh, and Kalyani, (2016), pointed out that clinical learning is critical to nursing education and the exposure of students to the clinical environment is one of the essential factor affecting the leaning process. As a result, the authors investigated the challenges nursing students experience in the clinical setting through a qualitative research method. The authors selected the participants through purposive sampling and used semistructured interviews to collect data. The utilized method enhances rigor through the collection of first-hand information from the people affected by the clinical environment. This offers strong evidence for the factor under investigation. This is because the methods expose the challenges that students experience in the clinical setting and what could be its source.
