Western Compressed Time Frame BScN Program N2600 Mental Health Care Week 9: Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders Overview Addiction, of any kind, is a chronic and relapsing diagnosable medical condition (APA, 2013; WHO, 2007) seen across all populations regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status, education or culture. It is also the leading cause of preventable death, globally. Despite the ubiquity of addictions, these illnesses are often neglected, and/or under-treated, in Canada. Persons suffering with addiction encounter stigma, alienation and isolation; systematic barriers to treatment work to perpetuate substance use disorder (SUD) itself. (Kunyk & Els, 2015). The emergence of research contributing to greater understanding of the structure and function of the brain has led to a new conceptualization of addiction. This evidence informed approach has paved the way for newer, better treatments for individuals and families affected by addiction and SUD. In this class, students will develop a greater understanding of addiction and the screening/assessment and multimodal treatment options, all of which contribute to improved processes and quality of care.
