Share your thoughts on the things that surprised you most about the selected vignette and discuss what you believe is the role of the school or mental health counselor in a case like this. For school counselors, how much information would you share with the teacher in your follow up? Vignette 3: A 16-year-old boy who has an underlying medical disorder that causes chronic pain reveals he has been receiving medical marijuana from his dad, who has a medical marijuana card. He wants your help communicating with his teacher, who feels he has been distant and sluggish in class. I chose Vignette 3. I was surprised to learn that the 16-year-old was receiving marijuana from his dad to relive his chronic pain. As the school counselor I must report any suspicious activity if it involves potential harm to the student. As a counselor, I must report harm, neglect, and abuse to the proper authorities. I would inform the dad to talk with his child PCP to find other options to relive his chronic pain symptoms. I would also inform the student how it is illegal to smoke marijuana as a teen under 18 years old. I would have to do a lot of damage control to keep our trusting relationship from disbanding. The father can also register for his child to get medical marijuana for his pain. It is in Maryland state law that minors with conditions can become a patient of medical marijuana, however, the rules are strict, and you must follow them as a caregiver. It is illegal for a minor under 18 to consume marijuana without a medical marijuana license. I would inform the teacher of him being in chronic pain until the other issue is taken care of legally. If the students get a medical card, I will keep that information private. When I found out that the 16-year-old was getting marijuana from his father to ease his chronic pain, I was shocked. If there is any questionable activity that could endanger the student, I have a duty as the school counselor to report it. I have a duty as a counselor to notify the appropriate authorities of any harm, abuse, and neglect. I would advise the father to discuss his alternatives for relieving his persistent pain issues with his child's PCP. I would also let the pupil know that it is against the law for anyone under the age of eighteen to smoke marijuana. To prevent the breakup of our trustworthy relationship, I would need to take a lot of remedial action. To help his child receive medical marijuana for pain relief, the father can also register. Maryland state law permits adolescents with qualifying ailments to receive medical marijuana; as a caregiver, you must abide by the stringent regulations. Without a medical marijuana license, it is unlawful for a minor under the age of eighteen to use marijuana. I would let the teacher know that he suffers from chronic pain until the other matter is resolved through the legal system. I promise to keep the details confidential if the students receive a medical card. Recreational cannabis use and possession in Maryland . banner-img-mobile.
