PROCEDURE 21.5 PROTECT THE INTEGRITY OF THE MEDICAL RECORD Task: Protect the integrity of the medical record. Scenario: You are mentoring a medical assistant student, who is on an externship. You notice the student routinely does not sign out of the EHR before leaving the desk. The facility's policy is to sign out or lock the computer before leaving it. Directions: Write up a dialogue between you, the medical assistant, and the extern. You must explain to the extern the facility's policy. Also address the hazards of not protecting the medical record. If the student does not change his/her behavior, you will need to address the situation with the department supervisor. ( respectfully discuss the situation with the student this is a work environment ) Inform the student about the facility's policy and the hazards of not protecting the electronic health record. Provide the student with strategies to protect the electronic health record. Inform the student what can occur if he/she does not protect the medical record. 1. What does protecting the integrity of the medical record mean? What are some examples of this? 2. Create a small Facility’s policy regarding this. (Ex. Clinic’s name. Office policy with EHR.) 3.
