1. When you think of the term “global health” what health problems, issues, or diseases come to mind?  (May provide bullet points instead of sentences) Issues that go across national boundaries Noncommunicable diseases Life expectancy Child mortality Tuberculous Climate Change Mental Health Increase of people with diabetes and heart disease 2. How would you go about measuring global health? If you oversaw a global organization to improve health, what would be your top priority? Why? I would go about measuring global health by rates of mortality, morbidity, and life expectancy per country. If I oversaw a global organization to improve health my top priority would be mental health. By providing mental health resources, it will hopefully help people take care of and prioritize their mental health. By taking care of people’s mental health, it would help improve the rates of mortality, and morbidity which would in turn boost life expectancy. 3. Please watch TedTalk video (link provided below):    Discuss one or more points that you think are important.  Include one or more quotes from the ted talk, explain why you think it’s important, and include references to one per reviewed article on the subject.  (APA format required) (Max response 500 words—minimum 200 words) After watching the TedTalk video what is important is the correlation between underperforming social progress and an increase in wealth and vice versa. The social progress index measures how countries provide for their social and environmental needs of their country (Social Progress Index, 2022). When countries were being scored using the social progress index. I found it crazy that countries such as Russia are “underperforming on social progress, relative to their wealth” and countries such as Costa Rica which is “overperforming on social progress relative to their GDP”. Russia is a large wealthy country yet despite all that wealth they have a lot of social issues. Costa Rica has most of their social issues under control although they have a lower GDP. I think this is important to note because it seems that the larger countries are more worried about money and profit than they are having prioritize their education system, health system, etc. Whereas smaller countries who do not have as much wealth have prioritized their health systems, educations systems, etc. and do not make money their priority. The larger countries who are prioritizing money should be prioritizing the well- being of people. As said in the TedTalk “If we prioritize the well-being of people, then we can make a lot more progress than our GDP might expect”. Throughout the TedTalk it was mentioned that we can increase our GDP while still focusing on the well-being of citizens which is in my opinion the most important takeaway. Research, on your own, the Millennial Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals and answer the following questions. (Watch: The Millennium Development Goals-link provided below) 1. What are the MDGs? How many countries participated? (May provide bullet points) Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Achieve universal primary education Promote gender equality and empower women Reduce child mortality Improve maternal health Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Ensure environmental sustainability Develop a global partnership for development 189 countries participated 2. How are the 8 MGGs inter-dependent? The MDGs are inter-dependent because they all largely influence each other. For example, by improving maternal health you also reduce child mortality. If we achieve the MDGs goals poverty will be reduced which will saves lives and people will benefit from the global economy in a sustainable environment. 3. Did we achieve our goals? If not, how would you propose reaching this goal? We did not achieve all our goals. I would propose reaching these goals by taking it one at a time. If one goal gets improved others will since the MDGs are inter-dependent and influence each other. 4. What are the SDGs? (List with bullet points) How many countries are participating? How are the SDGs interconnected? No poverty Zero hunger Good health and well-being Quality education Gender equality Clean water sanitation Affordable and clean energy Decent work and economic growth Industry, innovation and infrastructure Reduced inequalities Sustainable cities and communities Responsible consumption and production Climate action Life below water Life on land Peace, justice, and strong institutions Partnerships for the goals 178 countries participated
They are interconnected because some SDGs largely influence other SDGs 5. What would you like to include as an SDG?  What is important to you? I would like to include mental health resources in every country as part of the SDGs. Mental health is important to me especially because mental health resources are scarce in rural area of the United States. If they are hard to find in rural areas of the United States, then they will be even harder to find in third world countries. By improving mental health resources, we may be able lessen deaths by suicide.
