The healthcare and quality of life in France are compared greatly to the United States. Mental problems, including depression, chronic anxiety, bipolar disorder, phobias, and suicidal thoughts, affect one in four people in France ( Mental Health - Fondation De France , 2021). The Covid-19 pandemic has simply made matters worse. Fondation de France has been devoted to mental health issues for more than 15 years, during which time it has developed a comprehensive strategy that includes long-term funding of research on psychiatric disorders, early diagnosis, support for individuals affected and their loved ones during their recovery and reintegration into society, and the promotion of a fresh perspective on these illnesses ( Mental Health - Fondation De France , 2021). Recent years have seen tremendous advancements in the field of neuroscientific study. The Fondation de France has been spearheading an innovative and expansive initiative to fund research on psychiatric diseases since 2016. The three goals of the funded projects—finding biomarkers that enable faster disease diagnosis, enhancing patient care through assessment of current therapeutic approaches, and creating novel medications for more potent therapies—depend on collaboration between researchers and clinicians ( Mental Health - Fondation De France , 2021). For those suffering from mental illnesses, support entails more than just medical care. ( Mental Health - Fondation De France , 2021). As of 2022, the average life expectancy in the United States is 81 years ( United States compared to France .n.d.). As of 2022, that figure is 83 years in France ( United States compared to France .n.d.). As of 2016, 36.2% of adults in the US were obese. As of 2016, that percentage stood at 21.6% in France. As of 2017, the US has 19.0 women per 100,000 births who pass away during childbirth. As of 2017, 8.0 women do in France. As of 2022, there will be 5.2 infant deaths in the US per 1,000 live births before the age of one. As of 2022, however, 3.1 children in France do ( United States compared to France .n.d.).
In France, homeopathy and osteopathic medicine are the most well-liked alternative medical specialties. The French Medical Council has officially approved several forms of alternative medicine ( Topic: Alternative Medicine in France , 2024). Osteopathy is a method that uses physical manipulation of the bones and muscles to identify and cure functional problems. A survey indicates that about 85% of French people think this activity is good for their health ( Topic: Alternative Medicine in France , 2024). Homeopathy, the second most common kind of alternative medicine, is predicated on the pseudoscientific notion that a patient can be treated by severely diluting chemicals that, in a concentrated form, would produce symptoms identical to those being experienced. Notably, Boiron, the global leader in homeopathic remedies, is based in France ( Topic: Alternative Medicine in France , 2024). Following much discussion and research, the French government declared in 2019 that until 2021, patients' homeopathic treatment costs would no longer be reimbursed by French social security ( Topic: Alternative Medicine in France , 2024). The National Authority for Health (HAS) in France came to the conclusion that homeopathic remedies were not effective enough to warrant payment. Even with this ruling, only 11% of French citizens believe that those who receive alternative treatments ought to bear the financial burden ( Topic: Alternative Medicine in France , 2024). The French are wary because, historically, they have closely followed American policies regarding abortion and other reproductive rights. The U.S. Supreme Court made history in 1965 by allowing married couples to obtain birth control pills; two years later, France approved the pill for free for all people (Druckerman, 2022). After the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe decision in 1973, France decriminalized abortion two years later with the passage of the loi Veil, named for

the renowned postwar politician Simone Veil, who led the push to implement the legislation in her capacity as health minister (Druckerman, 2022). However, the two countries are currently seperating. The French National Assembly, or parliament, extended the loi Veil in March, allowing abortions up to 14 weeks, in anticipation of a potential reversal of Roe in the United States. The legislators were also considering a 2020 parliamentary report that estimated that up to 4,000 French women fly overseas annually for abortions due to pregnancy lengths exceeding the 12 week legal limit at the time (Druckerman, 2022). Additionally, lawmakers from the party of President Emmanuel Macron—supported by his prime minister—introduced a bill last Saturday that would codify abortion rights in the French constitution, the day after the Supreme Court overturned the Roe decision (Druckerman, 2022) Although the quality of life statistics are very similar between the two nations, there are clear differences in the rules governing access to healthcare and the limitations placed on it. Although the idea of the government having total control over our healthcare system, as it has in France, can unnerve Americans, I believe it's vital to consider how it would function. And who knows, maybe it would strengthen our bonds as a nation if everyone had access to the resources they need to live happy, healthy lives with the backing of our government.
