Some common medical and sexual health issues that may be addressed in
counseling include sexually transmitted infections, fertility concerns, contraception,
sexual pain or discomfort, and issues related to sexual orientation or gender
identity. Additionally, high-risk behaviors for health-related disorders like substance
abuse, eating disorders, and self-harm may also be discussed in counseling sessions.
When a client brings up medical and sexual health issues, it's crucial to create a safe
and non-judgmental space for them to discuss their concerns. As a counselor, I
would listen actively to their needs and provide information about resources that
could be helpful. Depending on the situation, I might refer them to a medical
professional for further evaluation or treatment.
A client with HIV/AIDS would need support in developing coping strategies and self-
care practices, including safety in sexual practices. To have positive health and
recovery, people with HIV require knowledge and skills such as adherence to
antiretroviral therapy, healthy lifestyle choices, regular medical check-ups, and a
robust support system (Beck & Carlton, 1993). By working collaboratively with the
client and providing ongoing support with regular check-ins, the counselor can help
the client maintain their positive health and recovery skills over time.
