Socialised Healthcare or Hybrid Healthcare
To answer whether it is time to consider socialized health care, or some hybrid is a bit
complicated. It is important to understand what socialised healthcare is and the types of
healthcare systems there are in place. When it comes to healthcare, many elements are involved,
such as the cost, the standard of treatment, the effect on individuals and companies, and the role
of government in society.
In the United States, healthcare is not always publicly provided. "The U.S. health system is a mix
of public and private, for-profit and nonprofit insurers and health care providers" (
United States
,
n.d.). The public insurers include Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance
Program (CHIP). Public insurers are funded by the federal government and are provided to those
who are in need, disabled, and the elderly. Private insurers are those that offer insurance plans to
individuals, families, and companies who support their workers' health insurance. Two other
types of healthcare organisations include for-profit providers and nonprofit providers. "For-profit
organizations can be defined as "a sole-proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company,
corporation, or other legal entity that is organized or operated for the profit or financial benefit of
its shareholders or other owners" (
For-profit Provider Definition | Law Insider
, n.d.); while
Nonprofit providers are owned by charitable organizations or religious groups.
Socialised Healthcare
"A healthcare system in which the government owns and operates healthcare facilities
and employs the healthcare professionals, thus also paying for all healthcare services"
(Anderson, n.d.), is how the healthinsurance.org website defines socialized medicine. In short,
this implies that the money needed to finance healthcare systems would come from the
government, in the form of taxes.
Socialised healthcare/medicine can be argued on both sides. Some arguments that can be
made in favour of socialised healthcare are it would provide increased access, reduced costs, and
improved quality. Arguments that can be made against socialised healthcare are reduced choices,
increased wait time, and reduced innovation.
A reason some might be in favour of socialised healthcare is it would level out the
playing field for the population. "Many Americans are uninsured, underinsured, or unable to
afford their prescription medications. Many citizens have been fighting for a more equitable
healthcare system for generations " (Cornelius, 2022). Some so many people are left without care
and therefore at risk. The prices of health insurance coverage, cost of care, and having to pay
out-of-pocket are some of the reasons some might be left without healthcare. It can be difficult to
have access to healthcare if you are low-income or unemployed. It can be argued that if the
government is for the people, then those who pay taxes would benefit from a socialised
healthcare system.
There was a study done in Turkey that provides evidence in favour of socialised medicine
(healthcare). "Furthermore, the results indicate that the program resulted in a more rapid
reduction in mortality in provinces with a higher baseline mortality rate. This implies that the
FMP [The Family Medicine Program] might have also contributed towards an equalization of the
mortality disparities across provinces." (Cesur et al., n.d.-b). The conclusion of the study states
that anyone who needs healthcare would receive care regardless of external factors, and therefore
the population would thrive.
Hybrid Healthcare
A hybrid prediction model is one that, to increase forecast accuracy and resilience, combines two
or more distinct model types. In situations where the data is complicated or noisy and it is
challenging to identify a single model that works effectively in every circumstance, hybrid
models are frequently utilized. It has been demonstrated that hybrid prediction models for IoT-
based sensor data are very accurate and scalable. This is because they overcome the
shortcomings of each individual algorithm by combining the advantages of many machine
learning methods. While this information is true, "there is still room of [for] improvement for
this model to use efficient feature selection with deep learning where the data to be trained is of
multiclass type." (“Big Data Based Hybrid Machine Learning Model for Improving Performance
of Medical Internet of Things Data in Healthcare Systems,” n.d.).
Final Thoughts
The current state of the United States's healthcare is in disarray. While both socialised and
hybrid healthcare would pose unfamiliar problems, I believe the good outweigh the bad.
Technology has provided some advancements, and it is important to put them into use.
Personally, I would recommend a hybrid system be put in place; there would be more access to
care while being accurate.
