Review the topic resources related to substance use disorders and process addictions. How do
process addictions differ from substance use disorders? What are three ways in which the
treatment approach will vary from process addiction to substance use disorders? How will age
and/or developmental stage influence the treatment approach?
Before reading about substance use and process addictions I was not aware there was more than one
form of addiction, but it makes sense. The biggest difference between the two are that substances
encompass chemicals with addictive properties, while process addictions encompass behavior patterns
(Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2016). Some ways in which the treatment process varies is that with substance
abuse usually there are more than one issue that accompany the addiction that also needs to be
addressed, such as mental disorders (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2016). The risk of a substance abuse addiction
is higher than process addictions and the concepts of tolerance and withdrawal are vital in substance
addiction, but not necessarily for process addictions (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2016).
Age greatly influences
the treatment approach because adolescence under the age of 18 need assent from their parents for
treatment that could potentially cause issues. Also drugs greatly affect the development of the brain. The
younger people develop a substance abuse addiction the greater negative effect it has on their brain and
their development. Factors such as these need to be taken into consideration by professionals when
making their initial assessment and when deciding what treatment plans are best, the client needs to be
able to fully comprehend their treatment for it to be effective for them.
