Some medical issues in addressing HIV/Aids are making sure that clients are getting the proper
medical checkups, antiretroviral therapy medications, prevention vaccines and to be aware of
any co-occurring conditions. With sexual health issues, it is crucial to provide safe sex
education and counseling as this can help to address and stigmas or concerns.
In an article by Rockville, it was found that staff members will best help clients with
HIV/AIDS when they know how to model skills and competencies, peer training and get
feedback, case presentations, and understanding the importance of assessment tools to best
help clients with substance abuse and sexual history (
Rockville, 2000).
Some issues that I found within this article for providers when they are working with substance
abusers who are HIV positive is that there is a fear of contagion, fear of the unknown, fear of
death, dying, grief, and loss, stigmatization, powerless and many more (
Rockville, 2000).
It is critical to address high-risk behaviors here that will help with harm reduction through
education of drug use, shared needles, risky sexual behaviors and provide resources. When it
comes to promoting knowledge, it is important to provide ongoing HIV/AIDS education,
focusing on the latest treatment options, prevention strategies, and self-care techniques. With
this constant education, it will hopefully build a solid routine for clients to join peer support
groups and follow up with doctors and counselors to promote positive goal setting and develop
a crisis plan.
I would help a client here by understanding their story, listening to different behavioral
patterns, educating them on the importance of safety with substances and sex education and
then address them to the client and plan to achieve goals to become sober through different
support groups.
