2 1. What is the difference between sterile and non-sterile compounding? Provide a brief definition of each and discuss how these types of compounding differ. Sterile compounding is preparing medications in an environment free of bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms. Non-sterile compounding is preparing medications that need to be customized for personal usage and to assist with comfort and ease for the patient. The difference between sterile and non-sterile compounding is the route of administration. Sterile compounding medications are used for injections, infusions, and application to the eye, where non-sterile compounding is the producing of solutions, suspensions, ointment, creams, powders, suppositories, capsules, and tablets. 2. What are two references that are utilized in sterile or non-sterile compounding? Include the name of each reference and summarize the information contained the reference. Two references that are utilized in sterile or non-sterile compounding are United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) USP general chapter <795> and United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) USP general chapter <800>. United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) USP general chapter <795> ensures patient counseling and reduces the risk of contamination, infections, or incorrect dosing when preparing for medications. United States Pharmacopeial convention (USP) USP general chapter <800> is the responsibility of handling hazardous drugs, implementing procedures for decontaminating and deactivating, cleaning spill controls, along with documentation.
3 3. What are some important differences between household measuring devices (such as teaspoons and tablespoons) and metric-based measuring devices? Be sure to include differences as it relates to the accuracy of each and appropriate uses of each. Household measurements are the least precise and exact of all the measurement systems. Household system includes measurements for drops, teaspoons, tablespoons, ounces, cups, pints, quart, gallons, and pounds (“Converting Within,” 2023, p.1). Household measurements and metric-based measuring devices differ in pounds, where household measurements are 12 ounces in a pound and 16 ounces in a pound for metric-based measuring devices. 4. What are some important differences between household measuring devices (such as teaspoons and tablespoons) and metric-based measuring devices? Be sure to include differences as it relates to the accuracy of each and appropriate uses of each. The importance of personal protective equipment (PPE), it protects healthcare workers from virulent pathogens and prevents exposure to body fluids and respiratory droplets. It also protects patients from transmissible pathogens (McCarthy et. al., 2020, p.1). Three components of PPE are gloves, masks, and gowns. The three each ensure preparation are sterile and to reduce the risk of human skin, hair, and clothing does not contaminate the drug product that is being prepared (Wollitz et. al., 2021, p.6). 5. 4 Aseptic technique is the protection of patients from healthcare infections and also protects healthcare workers from contact with body fluid, blood, and body tissues. Intravenous administration requires preparations to be compounded by the aseptic technique. 6.
