Consult Case Study 6.2, "Preventive Services at Greenwood Family Medicine," in Chapter 6 in
the textbook. What did you immediately notice about the dynamics of the team? Who had the
most authority? Why was this team ineffective in accomplishing its goals? What could the
team members have done differently to collaborate more effectively?
This case study is about a clinic of family medicine that has decided to take priority in two
areas: attention to family concerns and preventative services. A physician had recently
attended a continuing medical education program on preventative services and decided they
should assess the clinic’s provision of preventative services. When reading Case Study 6.2
Preventive Services At Greenwood Family Medicine, the first thing I immediately noticed
about the dynamics of the team was that they are very unorganized and do not know how to
collaborate effectively. “Virtually the entire meeting was spent attempting to find an
appropriate date and time for follow-up meetings” (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). The next
meeting did seem to go a little better due to them finding a way to redesign the form that is
reviewed for each patient to ensure information is not missing. I do think the physicians had
the most authority in this case, and I like how they were able to take charge and pull everyone
together to get a plan figured out. Just because there was a plan, did not mean that
everything was going to work out. The team was ineffective in accomplishing its goals
because the charts were not made in time, majority of the charts were incomplete or
inaccurate, nurses were spending 1-2 hours getting ready for the next day and were denied
overtime pay, and confusion caused increased patient waiting time. “The ability to collaborate
with a team is a helpful skill in any industry, and learning how to be more collaborative can
help you succeed professionally long term” (Indeed, 2023). The team members could have
tried to work together better, and had effective discussions about their concerns. I do beleive
that if there was more help in making the charts on time, it could have created less confusion
and frustration. Team work and effective communication could have helped in this scenario
because it could have helped acheive their goals, but in reality it just made everyone more
irritated and frustrated.
