Consult Case Study 6.2, "Preventive Services at Greenwood Family Medicine," in Chapter 6 in
the textbook. What did you immediately notice about the dynamics of the team? Who had the
most authority? Why was this team ineffective in accomplishing its goals? What could the
team members have done differently to collaborate more effectively?
Hello class,
In the scenario, the initial factor noticed in the case study is the miscommunication in the
organization, confusing the team. The clinicians have the most authority in the office. The
team did not accomplish its goals because of short staff and undefined job descriptions. A key
person is missing from the office staff data manager, health care manager, office manager,
health care administrator, or outsourced quality assurance specialist. This is a common
situation in many healthcare practices. Nurses' key role is patient care and assisting
physicians, labs, immunizations, and education. Medical records' key role is responsible for
administrative tasks and maintaining patient records. Insurance specialists have a specific job
description for authorization, approvals, and verification.
The deficits found in the office: Half of the children were behind schedule in at least one
immunization.
■
No patient charts noted that children had had vision screening.
■
Fifty
percent of children had not had anemia screening.
■
Seventy-five percent of children had not
had their blood pressure recorded in the chart.
■
Eighty-five percent had not had
tuberculosis screening.
■
Eighty-seven percent of children not screened for lead exposure
have no assigned personnel to manage this task. This is auditing. Your office personnel will
not manage this for free for you, nor should they be asked to. It is a lot of responsibility and,
if not done correctly, can be costly and fined by governing bodies.
The medical personnel team members have done a great job in brainstorming on what the
expectations should look like. Honestly, they do not have the time in the day to commit to
their position and this extra task. They should suggest outsourcing an auditor to the
physicians to help assist with this process. The five clinicians can research and budget an
outside person to assist the office with a plan to help; additional personnel is needed due to
NCIR regulations and standards to ensure it is completed correctly.
A key characteristic of influential team leaders that is often absent in science and healthcare
activities is the ability to resolve conflicts (Sapienza, 2004); this is a characteristic that can
increase motivation and help to ensure a team’s success.
