Consult Case Study 6.2, "Preventive Services at Greenwood Family Medicine," in Chapter 6 in
the textbook. What did you immediately notice about the dynamics of the team? Who had the
most authority? Why was this team ineffective in accomplishing its goals? What could the
team members have done differently to collaborate more effectively?
Good evening,
As given to us in this case story of "Preventive Services at Greenwood Family Medicine" we
observe right away that the office is very unorganized and job duties have not been prepared
properly. We also observe that this practice has a very small staff with just four nurses, one
receptionist and three medical records and insurance technicians and although that may
seem like a big staff to get the job done it seems that this practice has a high volume of
patients that are seen on a daily basis. After an audit was conducted the office learned that a
lot of duties surrounding preventive services were not done. It appears that although the staff
are responsible for their own jobs within their scope of practice there are clearly other
aspects of the practice that have slipped through the cracks. The team was ineffective in
accomplishing its goals because it seems that the team as a whole could not come to an
agreement on how to accomplish the goal in the first place. A lot of complaints were made by
staff members which did not assist them in moving forward and getting the job done.
Ultimately, the doctors had to step in and take over the job to ensure that the job was getting
done resulting in the system being eliminated and never being accomplished. Teamwork is
very important when it comes to working on a team to accomplish any goal and it seems that
this team struggled with working together and having effective communication. Having clear
communication and expectations of each individual of the team would of helped them come
to common ground and accomplish its goals to work towards fixing the breakdown and
devising a plan to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future.
