Report
Prenatal healthcare providers must address any health concerns that may impact the health of the fetus. Therefore, this study seeks to establish the efficacy of periodontal intervention and oral health education as means to improve the health and habits of pregnant women. PURPOSE Participants: Pregnant women aged 21 to 35 who have been diagnosed with periodontitis and are 6- 12 weeks into their pregnancy. Participants will be gathered through stratified random sampling of eligible population at Lexington, KY Hospitals. Procedures: Upon first prenatal checkup, participants will undergo periodontal examinations and respond to surveys about their oral hygiene. Treatment Group – will receive care for periodontitis and consultation regarding at-home care strategies. Control Group – will not receive any form of intervention. In third trimester, a second examination will monitor differences in periodontal status. Survey will be completed again as well. METHODS 1. Lee, Y. L., Hu, H. Y., Chou, S. Y., Lin, C. L., Cheng, F. Future Research: Expand locations to sample wider populations Take steps to minimize subjective classification of periodontitis severity and ensure reliability of survey data. CONCLUSION Prior research has established that anemia associated with periodontal disease is associated with low birth weights. (2) Periodontal disease has been linked to increased risk of pre-term birth, especially as the disease advances. (3) LITERATURE REVIEW Research Question: Is implementing periodontal intervention and oral health education during prenatal care effective at decreasing the severity and progression of periodontitis as well as increasing oral self-care rates in pregnant women? Research Hypothesis: Periodontal interventions for pregnant women during prenatal care will significantly lessen the severity and progression of the disease as well as encourage improved oral care habits. Periodontitis is a mouth condition that causes gum tissue damage and tooth loss. INTRODUCTION Periodontal disease is the most widespread condition of the mouth in humans, affecting anywhere from 20%-40% of the global population (1) Prenatal standards of care often fail to incorporate strategies to manage the risks of poor oral health during pregnancy, so establishing that treatment and education are effective is important Figure 1: Chronic/aggressive periodontitis.
