Have you ever wondered how our blood becomes oxygenated and sent out to the rest of our body, allowing us many vital functions? Well, it is a very interesting process and it starts out quite simply: blood that doesn’t yet have oxygen in it gets pumped into the heart through a tunnel-like vessel called the superior vena cava, the blood then travels into the right atrium which is akin to a holding cell for blood, it is then led into the right ventricle (another holding cell) through a valve that works like a salon door, opening with blood flow and closing shut afterwards. This non-oxygenated blood then gets sent to the lungs. A vein then brings the blood back to the heart through the left atrium, depositing it into the left ventricle, which is then pumped to the rest of the body with the help of another tunnel-like vessel, the aorta.
