History of music Music has been an aspect in health care for a while, however, music therapy being recognized as a profession is new How did music therapy begin ? In 1994 after WW2, soldiers symptoms were decreased with the use of music Soldier project research began where it was determined music had a positive impact In 1950 national association of music therapy formed in USA Mid 1950’s Music therapist were working independently in Canada IN 1960’s Norma Sharpe conducted a survey of music in hospital settings across canada Many hospitals were using music within the hospitals Early 1970’s Norma Sharpe set up the first conference within music therapy at St. Psychiatric Hospital in St. Thomas Ontario 1974 - created the canadian music therapy association together Now seens as an established healthcare profession Now known as CAMT 2017 - first MT professional Development Academy was created Music therapy within Europe Juilette Alvin, worked with children with Autism and those who may differ from others Founded the Society of MT and remedial therapy 1958, now the BSMT The first training program at guild hall in 1968 1989- european association formed 1976 - recognized by british government World federation of music therapy Began in 1985 Voices - international MT online journal
