MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY CARDIOVASCULAR, RESPIRATORY, GASTROINTESTINAL AND URINARY SYSTEMS Volume 1 / Issue 1 THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM The CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM provides the body’s organs with nutrients and oxygen, so the organs can properly perform their job. FIVE IMPORTANT MEDICAL TERMS – Cardiovascular System Cardiac Arrest – A term used to describe when the heart stops beating. Cardiology – The study of the heart and the blood vessels. Cardiomegaly – A term used to describe an abnormally large heart. Cardiovascular – Pertaining to the heart. Cardiovascular Disease - Diseases or conditions affecting the heart. THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM The RESPIRATORY SYSTEM is the network of tissue and organs that make up the breathing system. FIVE IMPORTANT MEDICAL TERMS – Respiratory System Tracheostomy – A procedure performed to create an opening in the trachea. Sinusitis – Inflammation or swelling of the sinuses. Laryngitis – Inflammation or swelling of the larynx. Oximeter – A tool used to measure the amount of oxygen in tissue. Rhinorrhea - Excessive drainage of the nasal passage, also known as a “runny nose”. THE GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM The GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM is the network of tissue and organs that make up the breathing system. FIVE IMPORTANT MEDICAL TERMS – Gastrointestinal System Tracheostomy – A procedure performed to create an opening in the trachea. Sinusitis – Inflammation or swelling of the sinuses. THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING MEDICAL TERMS Knowing medical terms can help you effectively communicate with you healthcare provider about the healthcare you receive. In this newsletter you will learn some important medical terms pertaining to the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and urinary systems.
Laryngitis – Inflammation or swelling of the larynx. Oximeter – A tool used to measure the amount of oxygen in tissue. Rhinorrhea - Excessive drainage of the nasal passage, also known as a “runny nose”. THE URINIARY SYSTEM The URINIARY SYSTEM helps unnecessary water, salt and other waste the body doesn’t need to function properly. The urinary system contains the kidneys, urethra, bladder and ureters. FIVE IMPORTANT MEDICAL TERMS – Urinary System Lithotripsy – A procedure performed to break up kidney stones using ultrasonic shockwaves. Nephrectomy – A surgery used to remove the entire kidney. Prostate – A gland that surrounds the urethra in men. Prostatitis – A term used to describe swelling or inflammation of the prostate gland. Urethra - The part of the urinary system that moves the urine from the inside of the bladder to the outside.
