It can also be referred to as an IVPB or secondary infusion. It includes attaching a smaller medicine bag to the main IV line and letting it drip medicine intermittently. The medication that needs to be given is in the secondary bag, and the maintenance fluids or flush are in the primary bag. An IV flow rate for gravity is calculated in gtts/min. IV piggyback for infusion pump: The infusion rate is regulated by an electronic pump to deliver the fluids at the correct rate and volume.
