Medical treatment and Religion
Does one’s religion affect their choices on medical treatments and procedures? Can having more healthcare workers certified in religion, such as Christian apologetics, help communities understand the importance of receiving medical treatments such as blood or blood products? Many communities throughout the world struggle from health disparities and access to
treatment due to personal decisions made based on religious views instead of science and medical proven facts. This increases mortality and morbidity for one who chooses to forgo critical treatments and care. Combining the disciplines of Community and Public health and Theology and Apologetics, research can be obtained into this and other healthcare related concerns that apply to people of religion. Many areas of research can be entered into from a different perspective if multiple disciplines are implemented into the research from their unique areas. Combined there can be a different outcome to create an answer that may not have been addressed in past studies in the areas from one individual discipline. “The IRP (interdisciplinary research process), especially the
integrative part of it, involves intuition and method, creativity and process, art and strategic decision-making” (Repko & Szostak, 2020, Chapter 3). Following a step-by-step process can help the interdisciplinian to come up with the right questions, methods and approaches to solving
the problem or issue posed. “Interdisciplinarians generally agree on the need to specify, at least to some extent, how to draw on disciplinary expertise and, especially, how to integrate disciplinary insights and theories” (Repko & Szostak, 2020, Chapter 3). For this particular question, the interdisciplinary approach will beneficial to allow for one to see and understand from a religious point of view why one makes the healthcare choices they make, and for understanding of how adding services for individuals faced with these choices can possibly

change their decision. At the least the healthcare team can then be satisfied with the decision as it
is understood from both a medical and a religious point of view. With the person being fully educated from a biblical perspective. Approaching the question of healthcare services and treatment from a Christian perspective, one must research exactly what the bible has to say about the topic and how to interpret what the bible says about being healthy, doctors, and one’s ability to make healthcare decisions. Doctors were present during Jesus’ time on earth and were sought for healing. Colossians 4:14 proves there were doctors. “Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings”. The bible also stresses health and taking care of one’s body. This can be found in Ephesians. It is discussing marriage and being healthy going into marriage. It explains loving one’s self and loving one’s spouse as well. Ephesians 5:29-30 says “After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church for we are members of his body”. One must now explore why religion may cause someone to refuse a certain treatment such as blood or blood products. One religion that refuses blood is Jehovah witnesses. The reason can be traced to a bible verse. Based on the literal meaning for many Jehovahs witnesses will refuse blood or blood containing products. “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. However you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. Genesis 9:34”. The bible also points out that Moses said to the Israelites, “Because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why, I have said to the Israelites, ‘You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut-off Leviticus 17:14”. “Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the Bible teaches that life, which is held as sacred, is represented by the blood of a creature, thus blood (representing life) acquires a sacred status. They, therefore, take

the view that taking into their bodies (parenterally or enterally) the blood of another creature violates Biblical law. They believe that this is consistent teaching throughout scripture, arguing that it originated with a command to Noah, was repeated to the people of Israel and reiterated to the first-century Christian church”(Ó Néill, 2017, p. 76). Researching this topic will take approximately 1 year. The research group will be composed of persons claiming to follow the religion of Jehovahs wittness. There will need to be a location to conduct the research while in the field such as medical facility or hospital. Researchers will need to provide Christain apologetic classes to healthcare professionals which will cost approximately $20,000 per individual willing to complete the degree.
