B. In response to the postings of your peers and the OECD indicators, discuss potential US policy implications; along with what we can learn from other countries. (two paragraphs)
Hello,
Thank you for your post! To continue your point on universal coverage, it is crucial for the US to implement policy implications such as universal health coverage for everyone to achieve a vision for a better health care system. Most OECD countries have universal or near-
universal coverage, which covers around three-quarters of all health care expenses. They fund most of their health care services through government schemes or by health insurance paid through social security contributions (OECD, 2019). This allows people to receive insurance coverage for a core set of health services. In the US, there are many working age adults who are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare. However, despite expansion of Affordable Care Act, many remain uninsured or underinsured. It is essential to implement universal coverage for all, which would allow health care affordability, and accessibility. There is a need for policy changes to slow hospital spending growth. The US spends considerably more on health than OECD countries. Administrative expenses make up 25% of overall US hospital spending, which is double what Canada and Scotland spend. Hospitals in Germany and France receive a substantial funding from the government and spend relatively low
on administrative costs per patient. Their government or compulsory insurance schemes also cover around 80-84% of pharmaceuticals costs (OECD, 2019). In America, despite the use of cheaper generic drugs, patient responsibility for drug costs significantly increased from $59.5 billion to $65.8 billion (Crowley et al., 2020). Improving drug price transparency would help reduce out-of-pocket costs. Price regulations on prescription drugs would allow millions of Americans to afford necessary medications without facing financial strain. References
