Report
Module 1 Newark is one of the largest and oldest cities in New Jersey has a population of 305,344 is facing health disparities (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022). There is a large disparity within the housing, disease burden, healthcare access and lack of insurance. Many Newark residents, particularly families who are socioeconomically disadvantaged have limited access to health care services. According to Census Bureau (2022), the City of Newark had over a 35% poverty rate and 19.6 % of its population under age 65 were uninsured in 2021. Many families in Newark struggle to afford health insurance coverage, receive necessary medical services due to financial difficulties. This can lead to delayed or inadequate treatment resulting in poorer health outcomes. Moreover, limited access to sufficient, safe foods, economic and housing instability greatly impact overall health and increase the risk of chronic diseases (Novick et al., 2020). The low- income households are more vulnerable in developing chronic diseases due to diminished access to health care. Many low-income, ethnic minorities face challenges in obtaining health insurance coverage in the market due to not being able to afford high premiums or they have fewer chronic health conditions, which makes them ineligible for Medicaid (Choi et al., 2020). This may prevent them from seeking routine check-ups and preventative care. Consequently, without early treatment, preventable diseases may go undetected until they progress to more advanced stages. Expanding health insurance coverage like Medicaid would ensure that everyone receives adequate health care. Medicaid expansion would help lower socio-economic families receive fair opportunity to attain highest level of health without facing financial burdens. Also, affordable, and safe housing options should be available for Newark residents. HUD housing and food insecurity aims in improving access to healthy food and affordable housing in low-income
communities (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 2018). Additionally, promoting health education within low-income communities can help empower Newark residents with knowledge and resources. This can be achieved through community programs and health fairs that provide information about healthy lifestyles and disease prevention.
