1 1. Are 3D printed prosthetics a sustainable innovation or a disruptive innovation as described in our lesson and readings? Why or why not? The emergence of 3D printed prosthetics can be seen as a groundbreaking advancement, drawing inspiration from the lessons and readings of this week. This groundbreaking advancement, re- ferred to as disruptive innovation, involves the use of technology to create a new market by im- plementing a unique set of principles that surpasses an existing market. As highlighted in the ar- ticle "Introduction to Medical 3D Printing and 3D Printers for Healthcare," prosthetics manufac- tured through 3D printing offer numerous advantages compared to traditionally made prosthetics. One notable advantage is the ability to customize and align the 3D printed models according to individual requirements. Moreover, this process provides cost and time efficiency, as well as the convenience of readily available materials. (FormLabs, 2020) 2. Do 3D printed prosthetics present as a first-mover opportunity? Why or why not? The concept of 3D printed prosthetics is often regarded as an opportunity for pioneering. A first mover in this context refers to a service or product that attains a competitive edge by being the first to introduce a particular product or service to the market. Being the first in the market typi- cally allows a company to establish a strong brand identity and cultivate customer loyalty before competitors enter the industry. Additional advantages include having more time to refine the product or service and the ability to set the market price for the new offering. It is common for competitors to follow suit after the first mover's success in an industry, aiming to capitalize on their achievements and gain a share of the market. However, the first mover usually maintains the majority of the market due to their established market share and loyal customer base. (Wat- son 2023) References FormLabs.
